Review: Hooga's Asus z80k - Page 11

I'll go ahead and solve it for you guys. It "feels" exactly the same. There's no difference between the two os's except for a different splash screen at the beginning. It doesn't run programs any faster, it doesn't load faster and it doesn't perform any better than 32bit xp. Honestly if you're not using a program that will use more than +4gb of ram (and this machine doesn't even support +4gb of ram) then you're not going to notice a whole load of difference at all. Atleast not any time in the near future.
Yes it's kind of shitty that they don't and don't plan to support a 64bit os but honestly for this notebook there's very little reason to support it. Anyone who is using a PC that needs the benefit of 64bit isn't going to be using a laptop or this laptop for that matter.
Anywho that's just my opinion... as usual I could be wrong.

well i finally bought an asus a4k athlon 64 3400 +, it is really sad to hear the 64 bit fact, It works like a breeze but still why install a 64 bit cpu then. My battery does not charge i just noticed. Whats going on. Can anybody tell me, everything seems to work fine but the other day when electricts were gone for a minute my laptop went of also, but this happened before also and it kept working, now when i unplug DC it shuts off, and the battery icon says charging but it stays at 0%

Sounds like maybe a dead battery. Have you tried calling asus to see if they can send you a replacement.
The other thing people are neglecting is that AMD doesn't offer anything other than 64bit processors in their top of the line models. If asus wants a top of the line processor in their whiteboxes they have to use the 64bit procs. Honestly you're not losing anything by running at 32bits. The rest of the notebook can't really take advantage of it.

make sure it's plugged in properly - i had this issue when i got the lappy, battery wouldn't take a charge at all

removed it and re-seated it a couple of times, and then it worked like a charm. just play around with it. pain in the ass, but once you get it in properly, it'll be good

the key is the battery charge light on the front, when you see it come on, your battery is seated properly

and yeah, the whole not supporting x64 is a bit of a piss off.. why use a 64 bit processor if you don't mean to support a 64 bit windows os. oh well, like digitalpunk said, nothing is really using 64 bit now anyways, so not really a big deal..

Hey guys... just wanted to share a quick story with ya...
Earlier somewhere in this thread it's mentioned that Albert is the only straight
shooting tech at Asus. I talked to him a few weeks back about the x64 apic issue
and told him about what I heard about him in this thread, and called back today
and met him. Who wants to touch me? heh
Anyway, I dropped my laptop a few nights ago real late at night when a spider attacked me and my z80k hit the floor and landed on the power cord which broke off
the ground pin inside as I caught the laptop. I completely disassembled the laptop, and let me tell ya... If you ever have the chance to, don't... It takes forever. So me and my friend tried to super glue the pin back on, since the plastic piece was all that
broke that it's connected to, and I tried soldering the pin to the board where it connects. The pin would break off real easy so I called up a local place this morning which said they'd fix it for around $100 (much better than dropping it off at Fry's or Best Buy aka Geek Squad who both wanted at least $200) since I couldn't find anyone who just sold the connector. I called Asus and talked to Albert again and he gave me an RMA number, and said I could drop it off at the RMA department where he was at since Asus is located somewhere in Fremont,CA (which is right next to Newark, CA where I'm from). I looked it up on google maps and found that they're located really close to my house... Maybe 3-5 miles but basicly down one long street. I went down there not expecting to talk to him, but I told one of the guys working there that they wanted me to talk to someone and not just drop it off (he was an old asian guy and just threw a form at me to fill out) and he went and had Albert come talk to me. He basicly told me it'd probly cost under $50, but they'll probly just pull the connector off a defective board and they probly won't charge me for it even though I voided my warranty. w00t! Hopefully I'll have the pleasure of working for them someday...

yup.. right in the a$$..

looking on the bright side nothing i use runs in 64 bit yet anyways

and by the time it does.. maybe we'll have laptops that do support windows x64

64bit os will be running on z80k one day.
I noticed that there is a special os call "ghost winxp" ,when 64bit os being popular, somebody may develop a "ghost winxp64"(it will skip the local apic)

Nvidia Nforce Audio Driver 4.62 and ATI 5.5 works well on z80k
you also can get ATI 5.3 and 5.4 from ASUS m6v or v6v

I'm running a 64-bit OS now ... FreeBSD 5.4 for AMD64. Having the extra registers makes a big difference. Certain Linux distributions also support 64 bit.

Ciao,

There's a new forum on the new ASUS website! Let's all post a request to enable local apic!! I've already done it for the A2K (=Z80K). Maybe if they see a lot of requests they would wake up!

an announcement on that will appear in weeks.

Updated - Microsoft has officially released the new 64 bit version of windows. This has been available in Beta for well over a year to allow software and hardware manufacturers to be ready for the release.

Upon the official release of MS x64, I purchased a new Asus laptop with an athlon64 processor so I could begin my own testing and review of the new OS. Our developers have run this OS for over year. It turns out that the Asus laptops with the AMD 64 bit processors do not support windows x64.
The issue is with a setting (or lack of) in the BIOS for APIC, the Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller. The Windows x64 install dies immediately. Here is the direct quote from Asus tech support: "Hi, This model is not supporting 64bit based operating system even though the CPU is 64bit-ready."

The Asus web page did not say these new 64 bit laptops do not support Windows x64. Misleading at best. Who’s bug is this, Microsoft, AMD, or Asus ? In researching my processor of choice to run x64, I overlooked the in depth research of the specific Notebook manufacturer. Winxp32 bit does run well on the Z80k if that is all you ask of it. Asus tech support would not say if or when we could expect a bios upgrade to cure the issue.

In the meantime, it seems that Linux works well on most AMD64 machines and yahoo just posted a similar article: "Head to Head: Linux vs. Windows on 64-Bit Chips".

Update: "Z80K is not supporting 64 bit windows and no plan to make it supporting in the near future", Asus replied for the z8000k laptop. Other brands don't have the problem.

UPDATE May 25th 2005: Asus just emailed us and told us that a BIOS update is currently in testing. Windows 64bit will be eventually supported in these laptops.

seems a good news! By the way, I think Win64 bit to be pretty useless as by now... but maybe in 1 year it can become the only way to run your favourite programs!
