Asus M6 hotkeys

It seems that asus has built a good laptop, but the software they are providing it is horrid. So are some configuration issues.

The top 5 buttons are working well: they bring up the defaultmail and internet applications, turn on/off wireless and touchpad. The power4gear button works only with power4gear, which seems like an 1 hour job. They could include some help or some flexibilty: Why the heck do some schemes don't have CPU performance in them and there's no way to add it ? If you use another solution (like the built-in, or SpeedSwitchXP) you lose the functionaloty of the key.

The side "AudioDJ" keys aren't working at all in Windows, except from the play key, that instead of launching the default media player (like winamp) it launches WinDVD (in my case). The next/previous stop buttons don't do nothing.

Has anyone found a way to make these buttons work ? I know that in linux you can remap them to do whatever you want, because the generate standard ACPI events. But in Windows ???

Try the latest asus hotkey driver:

ATK0100_XP_2K_050121.zip
Version: V1043.2.15.41
Date: 2005/01/21

My side buttons bring up Windows Media Player and control its operation fine.

I agree about how Powergear's interface and flexibility sucks though!

Did you ever see/try the modded power4gear posted over at legit reviews forums? Someone cleaned up the code and put a nice gui on it supposedly and it is much better.

Thanks for that tip Kronus. Here's the link:
http://power4gear.bk-kicks.com/

It is much cleaner, but still doesn't do throttling like Speedswitch. I think I'll stay with it.

I honestly don't see much of a difference...

personally i just use speedswitch and it's great.

Yep, they control media player fine, but only media player! Even microsoft multimedia keyboards can be customized to control winamp! It is a generic event for Windows to handle, not some hardcoded application!

I'll try the customizerd power4gear, thx for the link!

It's good. though it needs to be more customizable...

My side buttons control ASUSDVD... although when media player is running, they control that too

same here...my side buttons control asusdvd...i got a cordless mouse from logitech that functions as a remote for media as well...i really like it...has button to open a media player (customizable, mine opens winamp)...volume, ff, rew, play/pause, stop...supposedly also works with dvd, but i haven't tried it yet...

edit: is it possible to disable the side buttons? i'm constanly bumbping them and opening asusdvd by accident...and yeah, i could probably figure this out, but i'm too busy watching football (read: i'm lazy)

It seems that the side buttons open up the DVD player of the system. This is sooo stupid. I hope that Asus makes them customizable, as they should be.

Hm ,another sign of stupidity. When I find some time I will contact the Power4Gear hacker to see if maybe we can come with a solution. I urge all Windows programmers to help fix this stupid thing, it can't be so hard!

I have posted a quick-fix on changing the internet and mail buttons to run a specific task. Check the thread on notebook general. I have started debugging the hcontrol program to change its behaviour. I'll let everyone know once I have something working.
