Discussion Thread: AMD64/AMD64 Turion with PCI express

Since there is a Sonoma thread and there are also lots of people favor AMD64.
Please allow me this Newbie to create this thread, so that all the information about AMD64 or AMD64 Turion (dunno if i spell it correctly) can all gather in one thread.

Due to the release of X700, the current 9700 PRO instantly become a old tech card to lots of gaming notebook. (According to ATI, X700 = about 2x performance of 9700 pro but not sure if it is true)

However, X700 still can't satify truly ultimate gaming and the new Sonoma chip, according to TomHardware testing results, it only has 5% increase in performance and DDR2 hardly do anything for the performance. Therefore, I still believe that AMD64 has the potential to be best for both gaming and working.

Which company is going to make AMD64 + PCI express + X800 + 17 inches glossy screen notebook? Anyone know?

I know the x800 will only fit in the 17" chasis, but the x700 will fit in the 15" and 15.4" chasis right? Haven't heard of any info about your question though, sorry.

The Sager 7620 has a 15.4" screen option (other is 15.0") and an X800. It takes a big laptop, not necessarily a 17"

Huh...coulda sworn I read it required a 17". Oh well, still a bit too power consuming and hefty for my tastes.

As I understand it there is now atleast 4 diffrent modeles of notebooks with AMD64 + PCI-express officially announced. What is taking so long? The Arima notebooks have been available for quite some time now. Already on the manufacturers webpage since last year. Will they ever be picked by any company though? Or will the same thing happen to these notebooks that happend to the Clevo D400K released mid 2004? No one ever sold it in USA. It had Mobile Athlon 64, SXGA+, Radeon 9700, Built in Camera, bluetooth, IR, firewire and all the regular stuff. Would have been a nice all around notebook. But never to reach the market...

I'm just curious, what is the point of waiting? No one dares to screw with Intels Sonoma release is my guess...

Sonoma is not as good as it seems....check out TomHardware review....5% in overall increase performance, DDR2 performs almost the same as DDR.... Intel's new chip = disappointment

I really hope this isn't the case now, but given Intel's long track record for anti-competitive business practices I wouldn't be much surprised if it happened again. This is also the main reason why I honestly can't recommend any of their products

I completely agree with you, Intel's new Sonoma platform is a huge disappointment. The only thing that saves it from total disgrace is the ATI Mobility Radeon X700 I think...

There aren't any good Sonoma laptops released, I think. The current crop of Sonoma laptops are kind of disappointing. I hope better notebooks are released down the line with more up-to-date components that fares better against Carmel.

I completely agree with you, Intel's new Sonoma platform is a huge disappointment. The only thing that saves it from total disgrace is the ATI Mobility Radeon X700 I think...
If you think that's bad, just look at some of the ruthless tactics in intel's history. It's a typical giant corporation that will do anything and pay anyone off to bolster its bottom lines, just take the next (fairly well known) story for example:

Yes as usual, bad or less bad, still the botomline is no one wan't to mess with Intels releases... No one want's to announce Turion notebooks this close to a competing Intel technology release. That's the way it always have been. I would like to see a company that ONLY has AMD products... From Turion and all they way up to Dual Core nForce 4 SLI. I bet they could do good, and get people educated about AMD. You got to remeber, Joe Average thinks Centrino is required to go wireless due to all the Intel mass brainwashing tactics.

While the news story say that FIC will come out with Turion 64 notebooks in the second half of this year, it dosen't mean that we won't see Turion 64 notebooks from other vendors in this half.

I imagine it must be easy to control the market for Intel.

If you were product manager at a company like HP ( just for the sake of argument ) and head of deciding what notebooks to offer to the market. Would you turn down a personal bonus from Intel that no one need to know about at somwhere around $10.000.000, to only promote Intel notebooks, or downplay any AMD notebooks, like the r3000z series ( just for the sake of argument )?

For Intel that's like a drop in the sea and then $xxx.xxx.xxx... in increased revenues for what would have been lost to competitors like AMD and at the same time is a loss for AMD aswell.

I bet they do also screw with the whole chain of manufacturing, chipset, motherboards etc etc to always lag behind with AMD technology all the way to the companymanagers wich are paid off when a products finaly becomes available... like the two Arima AMD64 + PCI-express notebooks ( just for the sake of argument ) wich have been available since end of last year.

Honestly, when it comes to Intel I wouldn't be surprised if this is the norm.
