My Experience w/ Sony, Hypersonic, Dell

Thread Starter
I have been having a very difficult time buying a laptop and so I thought I would share my experience to help others avoid repeating it. My parameters are as follows: 17" screen w/ wsxga or wuxga; solid wireless internet connectivity; basically no compromises. I'm willing to pay up to $4,000.

I first ordered the Sony Vaio A-170. 17", wuxga, Centrino 1.8ghz. That was a nice computer, and Sony's service was very good notwithstanding comments I've read to the contrary. I had two major problems. First, it would not play Doom 3. I'm not a big gamer, but I played Doom years ago and I wanted to try the new version. Having shelled out over $3,000 for a notebook, I was furious that it would not play the latest game. Second, the hard drive was "partitioned" such that my 80gb drive acted like a 20gb C drive and a 60gb D drive. That turned out to be a pain in the neck when I tried to move programs from C to D and they stopped working. I ultimately returned the computer for a full refund. Note: Virtually all manufacturers have a 21 day or 30 day policy whereby you can just return the computer no questions asked. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT IF NECESSARY.

Next, I ordered the Hypersonic Aviator GX7. My strategy was to go very high-end so that it would definitely play Doom 3. That system had 3.4 ghz extreme edition, a much more powerful ATI video card as compared to the Sony, a wsxga screen (which I thought was just as good as the Sony's). Hypersonic cannot deliver a computer in the timeframe they say they will. 7 to 9 days became over 30 days. Cost was over $4,000. Result: Would not play Doom 3 even after hours spent with tech support. I was furious. In all other respects it was an awesome machine. Fans were on about half the time. They were only a little annoying -- not a big deal. Hypersonic also failed to configure the raid utility -- I wanted raid 0 and they didn't do it. I returned the computer for a refund. Note: It was destroyed in the return transit, but I had insured it. Whew! If you have the risk of loss in a return, insure the package!

Next I bought a Dell Inspiron 9200. This was the cheapest of the bunch -- about $2,700. Not as good looking as the other two, and the screen (wuxga) did have a weird grainy texture that could be annoying. This game played Doom 3 no problem which I thought was interesting. However, it could not maintain a steady wireless internet connection for some reason. After hours with tech support, they sent a new one as a replacement before I had to return the first one. When I got it, I had the same problem. Tech support could not fix it. Weird, since I have not read about other people having this problem. I finally gave up and returned it. Here is where I came to hate Dell. It was pretty obvious that they were willing to do or say anything necessary to try to wear me down and forget about returning the computer. They told me it was too late to return the computer (it wasn't), that there was a 15% restocking fee (the website says there isn't), that I would need to pay for shipping (I refused). Finally, the Dell rep said that I would be stuck with the sales tax even though the computer was returned. This is absolutely fraudulent -- there is no sales tax on a computer that has been returned for a refund. This post is pretty long, so I won't go into the details of how eggregious the behavior was, but email me if you want to know. DO NOT BUY FROM DELL IF YOU CAN HELP IT -- THEY ARE OFTEN TROUBLE FREE, BUT IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM AND NEED TO RETURN THE COMPUTER YOU ARE SCREWED.

I have now ordered an Alienware Area 51 7700. I'll let you know what happens next.

If you are willing to spend a lot, Falcon might be worth looking at. Very good customer service and build quality from what I hear...

I'll counter what this guy is saying and say that Dell is a good company to buy from. if you do some research first...

I agree about Dell. The worst buying experience I've ever had. I'm surprised about Doom though. The Hypersonic should play it, and my Sony A190 plays it fine, although not at the highest settings.

I'd look at the Sager 9860 myself.

Cheers

Heck, Falcon or Voodoo will probably install and test Doom III for you if you ask and pay a little more.

must be only me.. but i think that dell has pretty good service. the heatsink on my bros computer (dimension xps gen 3) leaked and dell sent a guy the next day to come over and fix it. everythign went smooth and fast and now the computer is great. my brothers computer is an xps and i heard that they get a different set of service support staff so that might be why the service was really good but i dunno.

oh and if youre willing to spend money, voodoo and falcon are probebly the ferraris and lamborghinis of computer making.

edit: can you please explain to me why u decided to go full out on the hypersonic machine and went cheap on the dell xps gen 2?? Although i cannot guarantee that your wireless internet connection with the dell xps gen 2 would be perfect, was there a reason why you went with the 9200 and not the xps gen 2???

Hypersonic has an option to also install and test Doom. Not sure if it was available when burnstem purchased his GX7, but I know it is an option now. Strange though that you were unable to get it to work with the system as I had no problems. Could have been the difference in video cards or so.... my GX7 had the ATI.

As for the shipping.... I think there are very few individuals who have claimed to get fast shipping from Hypersonic. Always one of the items they get hit on and it gets worse if you order the paint. But well worth it in the end. I believe they countered this with the pre-built/painted systems, but not completely sure.

Wishing you the best with the new purchase since you have not had a good track record as of yet. The 7700 is pretty much the same as the EX7/9860/9880 models and definitely a nice system.... and plays Doom 3.

Good luck!

Yes, HyperSonic ships pretty quick once the painted system arrives back to their facility. For example, when I ordered my Aviator MX6 in Fire Mist Pearl, it took approximately 4 weeks to arrive back to them. However, it was shipped within 2 days once the system actually arrived in their facility painted. Therefore, if their are no parts backordered, I would expect a non-painted notebook to ship definitely in ~ 1 week, give or take a few days.

Falcon prices are insane!!!!!

I just ordered a $3900 laptop from Hypersonic.

The same system, configured exactly the same (but with smaller drivers as they don't offer 100gb), came about to be $2000 MORE!!! YES, $2000.00!!

For what? A goofy case and a basic paint job? Please.

I have been impressed with these paint jobs. My system doesn't get worn as much as some because I use an external mouse and keyboard about 99% of the time. As such, the only paint wear is on the external devices. And they are holding up quite well.

I am still amazed at the python version Dennis got. I was thinking about that in a red python look. But I ended up going back to the metallic.

I will also state that I have not had a lot of problems with my dells that I have. I have 2 Inspiron 8100s and when I had a problem, Dell was quick to ship a replacement part. And just like with Hypersonic, all of my communication was via emails. That to me makes a big difference.

Congrats on the purchase WinterXL.

Be careful with Falcon Northwest now. Their paint jobs have been receiving not so good reviews in the latest reviews I have seen, both desktop and notebook. I believe in the past they used Smooth Creations when they were known for having the best paint jobs out there, which is who HyperSonic now uses. However, on Smooth Creation's site, it states their contract is now exclusive with HyperSonic so I assume Falcon no longer uses them which could explain the sudden drop in quality. Therefore, I have no idea who is doing Falcon's paint jobs now.

Anyone else get the feeling that PEBCAK (Problem Exists Between Chair and Keyboard) is the problem here? Who doesn't know how to format a hard drive and reinstall to regain pointless restore partitions? Who doesn't know how to fool around with video card drivers to get cranky games to run? Who doesn't know that Dell's stock wireless card ships with crappy drivers and needs updated ones to maintain a stable connection?

This is all stuff you can discover if you don't know already by searching these wonderful Notebookforums.

Oh well....
