Recording DVD on 9860

Thread Starter
Has anyone tried to hook up their dvd player to the 9860 and burn the movie onto their harddrive. Then burn it onto a dvd-r (for backup purposes of course). If not possible, are their any good dvd copying software out there that has not been banned yet?

the problem is if you do that you dont get any of the menu's etc just the straight video like a vhs but it does work, and dvd copying programs usually dont work well either because movies use dvd9's which are still a big bigger than dual layers, so there really is no perfect solution

i use to have a version of dvdxcopy and it seemed to work well (it did have a few glitches though).

What i was wanting to do
- copy the dvd to the hard drive
- use a different program to create my own menus and not worry about the excess features (I dont ever watch them anyway)

Any good programs for making your own menus (i was thinking about trying windows movie maker, but have not gotten around to it yet)

Actually, u can with this program. Plus, theres a forum to ask questions etc. if u get stuck and it gives u the ability to pick only the menus and items that u want, so u can remove previews, commentarys..etc.

dvdshrink programs cut quality though, something i'm never prepared to do, i usually just copy dvds to my hardrive and watch them off there actually. although i guess if that program lets you remove extras i could probably cut out the commentary and all that extra crap and fit it on a dual layer..hrmm

You could look here for DVD copy software:
http://www.best-dvd-burning-software-reviews.com/
I've found that if you want to copy a DVD using any type of software, and want to fit it all on one disc, there is always some compression, since most movies are larger than the 4.38 gigs avialable on a single layer DVD.
With a dual layer DVD, you have over 8 gigs of space, so once you've eliminated the extra features, you can get a perfect one to one copy, but the dual layered DVD's are quite expensive.

Try out DVD shrink. I gaurantee you will not be dissappointed. So far not a single person who had tried it was not amazed by the quality.

It is astounding.

By the way, its freeware, so I gain nothing by promoting it. Its not like I own stocks in the company or something.

Do you know if dvd shrink contains spyware/adware?

I have not been able to research it more. I will probably download it tonight and give it a shot.

As far as I can tell, theres no adware/spyware/malware of any kind. I always check downloads and always re-run checks after installing new software just to be on the safeside.

Hit the forums and search or ask questions or just troll around and see if there are any problems people r experiencing with it. The main reason I use it is that it can break most encrypted DVDs and makes it possible to render the copy in a "region free" format i.e. can play on DVD players of any region.

I have not tried to "backup" a DVD from a different region yet to see if it is possible to extract and backup the DVD copy into a regionless version (I will try to eventually) but if that is possible the potential is awesome.

Think of all the cheap DVD's that are on Ebay from Asia. Just buy, backup and render into regionless and play away.

Also, if you have a firewall like ZoneAlarm, you can very easily check to see if DVDshrink "phones home". It has never attempted to access the internet on my setup (besides even if it did, you have the ability to contain it using your firewall).

Falcon,

If you set the DVD size to be 8.5GB then there is normally no compression on the resulting files. You can then use DVD Shrink to load the file created and view it. Left click the review panel for full screen etc..

Edit: I don't know if the 8.5 GB options is enable if a DL device is not attched to the system. My DVD burner is the NEC 6500A with DL support.

Actually works real well.

Two programs you will need. Both are free and available on the net. Here's a god site: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/software2.htm

DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink.

If you use the analyze option of DVD Shrink, the quality degradation is barely noticable. Use DVD Decrypter for "difficult" programs and then DVD Shrink to shrink it and DVD Decrypter to burn and verify the DVD.

Don't waste your time trying to duplicate a DVD from a video stream and then add you own menu's etc... Takes too long, the tools are not that good, and the resulting product will look like S....

I have used DVDShrink to compress a DVD to 62% (62% of its normal size) and I could not tell the difference between it and the original.

The only time u could notice the difference is when u used slow-mo or when u turned on the captions. The captions really flicker alot. Very irritating.

I've used DVDShrink for quite some time. As long as you analyze it and cut out the extra stuff like French, Spanish subtitles out, there's hardly any compression and I haven't noticed any difference in quality even at a higher compression rate. Also, except for difficult movies with encryption or something on them, you shouldn't need to use any other software. You can set up DVDShrink so that when it's done analyzing and ripping the DVD, it automatically opens up Nero and starts the burn (upon having a Blank DVD inserted in the drive).

I would recommend www.dvdriphelp.com Use a program called dvddecrypter or smartripper. Personally, I've been able to burn DVD's on the fly using the DL burner.,

I purchased an external DL burner, but I have not purchased any DL disks yet. I have tons of the DVD-R i want to get rid of first. Also, I have heard that the DL disks are petty expensive at the moment, but i have not confirmed that yet my own eyes.

I downloaded dvddecrypter and dvd shrink. I am about to see how they work.

Well i'm one that used it, and thought it sucked. If i paid for a DVD, it's because of the quality.

I'm sorry to hear that. You need to perform 'Deep Analysis' when u rip it, it takes a little longer but the result is well worth the extra 15 minutes.

The longest that DvdShrink took for me was about 1hr 15 minutes. Usually its more, like a 30-45 minutes.

Good luck, w/ it. I hope it works well for you. If u continue to use it, check out the forum. There is a way (advanced users) to even compress certain parts/tracks/chapters more or less than others. It is very powerful when u get a good grasp of its innards.

I cannot believe that it is freeware.

Cheers.
