Is the 9200 for me?

Hey all - I've been lurking on these forums for quite some time and have decided to take the plunge and buy a laptop. First off, I'm going to be gaming quite a bit as well as watching tons of DVDs and some puttering around in Photoshop and Max. Now originally I was really gung-ho about the ABS Mayhem G3 as my friend in in love with his G2 and it looked like the perfect bang for buck scenario for me...however, the battery life and heat turned me off and that's when I discovered the 9200. As I said, I love watching movies and would most definitely prefer a widescreen laptop, so that was one thing that drew me in, along with the Radeon 9700 and great battery life.
My question is, in a college environment, is the 9200 too big/bulky/heavy to be of use in class/library? Is it going to be anchored in my dorm room or can I realistically move it around at times? Also, I don't need the laptop now per se, but I'd love to have it unless there are going to be big advantages for waiting 2 months (my max)...Thanks in advance for your help and sorry for the rather lengthy post...

ive heard nothing but awesome about the 9200 and its performance. It will play most games and the 17in screen is good too. Well i have a 8600 and i LOVE it. I am able to play alot of the graphic demanding games and can move it around easily. DVD watching is great on it too. If your worried about the size of the 9200 maybe you should think of the 8600??? its a great laptop

Hey pagalme,

I have th2 9200 and use it in Uni. I was also considering ABS until I stumbled across some Dell coupons on digitaldeals.net and bought the i9200. You've undoubtedly read most of the threads on it, so I'll just say it's great.

To answer your first question about the 9200 being a bit big, I'm going to say yes, it is. I use it mainly at the library, and while it's light and I have no problems moving around with it in my backpack, it's too large for a classroom desk. What I mean is that it'll fit on your desk, but that's about all that'll fit on your desk. Truthfully, it's a 17inch screen that's meant more to leave at home and occasionally bring to school when you need. If you're looking for something to use as a substitute to writing down classnotes, I'd suggest a smaller laptop.

Also, if you don't need the laptop now per se, my advice is to be patient and wait for all the new laptops to come out. I think your patience will be rewarded with more options, newer technology, and cheaper prices for the current offerings.

So to sum up, the i9200 is a compromise between media experience and portability. I use it mostly at home for DVDs, games and work, but I also take it to University once or twice a week, mostly to the library. I have no trouble lugging it around as it's relatively light, however it's a tad large when using it in the classroom to take notes as it monopolizes your deskspace.

Good luck!

im 6'5 and i bought the i9200 for college this fall, its amazing (which you know already) and cheap. The size is not an issue for me at all so if you have a big framed body then you wont have a problem. Even if you dont it shouldnt be anything too bad

Alright thanks for all your comments - they've reinforced my belief in the 9200 and I'm pretty sure I'll get it unless something comes out (9300? ) in the next few weeks that changes that...
