shutdown/login problem

Well got my 8790 last week finally, but I've got a minor problem.. So yes, specs are listed below, and I've got win xp pro loaded. I've also gone to microsoft and loaded the needed updates for it.

Now the problem I'm having is sporadically when I log in it will sit there with just the background picture and nothing else and won't complete the log-in process. Collary to this problem is when I go to shut it down it will sit on the windows is shutting down screen. However there have been times when the shut-down and log-in works just fine.

So I guess the question is, where should I begin to troubleshoot this problem?

Go into 'msconfig' and see what's in your startup. Also, a good way of checking is going to Start->All Programs->Startup. See if that fixes the startup. Also, when shutting down, kill everything that's in your taskbar, one by one, to see if it's an annoying program that refuses to die when you tell the computer to shut down.

Uncheck everything and see if your computer starts up. If so, it should start significantly faster (I feel your pain, all the programs that keep the beast happy).

I encountered this before; it seems like the 8790 has to get used to Windows being on it. You said you have only had it for a week, so give it time. If the above fix doesn't work, re-post, or try to contact me or anyone ele who owns a 8790 via PM or IM. I know that FriedToast is a 8790 trobuleshooting fiend, so he's a good bucket o' knowledge.

Well, it appears that it is something to do with my ATI driver. I'm not sure exactly what though, I tried uninstalling it and letting it re-install but it's still giving me issues. Now when I try to play sims2 (okay so it's the newest computer intensive game I have so I figure it's a good troubleshooting game) after a bit it will stop working on me and apparently get stuck in a loop. Now how do I tell if I have the most recent drivers related to this? And if I don't have them where would I get them?

Thanks again.

To get the latest go to sagers website and get it there. Also use driver cleaner 3.3 and remove the previous driver and reboot before you load or reload it. That way you have a clean slate for the driver. If you need help email me direct at freejack@simpletechsol.com

*mutters* Well, tried the whole drive cleaner and making sure I had the updated drivers. And no go on that. It was the same driver and it didn't help the problem any. Actually it made it worse, but that's probably because write cacheing, or was that fast writes? (which I disabled earlier as I read somewhere else that that would help the issue) got enabled again. But I'll disable them again shortly.

From what I've read of others with this problem is it sounds like it is getting stuck in an infinate loop, why I haven't figured out yet, nor how to fix it obviously.

So I guess the question is, what steps short of reloading the OS (which is all I can think of now) can I try to fix this problem. Dang it I don't want to send it in to get fixed, it took a week to get here (after waiting 2 months for it to ship in the first place) and 2+ weeks without a semi-decent computer again, gah.

try disabling your virus protection. If the firewalls conflict between the OS and the VP it may cause a similar problem.....do you have a restore point to go back to?

Argh... Well I RMA'd it on 10 feb, and I have to say Sager is most uncooperative. I sent them an e-mail asking 4 specific questions, I get a reply to two of them. They never sign their e-mails and do not appear to read the message trail before them. They keep on calling me by my last name, when I clearly signed the previous e-mail with my first name. (I think they are doing this because of the way my name appears to them in e-mail with the last name first, but still.) It also doesn't appear that they know how to speak proper English either.

Hi (Last Name), your computer is fixed. It will be send to post office soon.

You do not have to worry about the return shipping. We cover the shipping charge to mail computer back to you.
That is the sum entirety to the e-mail they just sent me. And with me being in Europe so multiple hours ahead of them the whole one e-mail a day is rather annoying when I have to send them 3 e-mails just to answer one question. I am highly unhappy with the support from Sager.

Hopefully they will actually reply to the next e-mail fully. I want to know what was wrong, and what they fixed (which I already asked once) and when the heck I can expect it. This is unacceptable, I thought they had a certain number of days to fix the thing, and when I sent it to them I hadn't even had it 2 weeks...

Okay rant over, thanks for listening.

LOL I bought mine thru PCTorque, when Sager don't give answers I ask PCTorque and you will get answers to the best of their ability.

This Sager Tech support is totally unacceptable. I just got the reply...

Hi (last name), the manufacturer warranty does not cover the return shipping. You need to pay for the one way shipping cost.
Just totally unacceptable. I said I purchased the shipping insurance directly in the e-mail I had just sent them, plus I asked multiple other questions (namely what was wrong with it and when did the receive and fix it) yet that was again the sum total of the reply.

I bought mine through pctorque as well and their customer service was excellent, but my goodness, this is just the frosting on the cake with the problems with this computer. But dag nabit, I want my computer back. I just got into WoW and this me and the husband sharing a computer to play just doesn't work.

*sighs* Guess I'm off to mail sager and ask the questions when I get to work in the morning if I don't get any better replies tonight.

I would say email Pctorque and run the gambit with them. Sager appears for customer service to be flip card jockies that only understand a 1/4 of what they are reading. The repair policy if the unit is under warranty is 72 hour from time of receipt to ship. They had mine over 72 hours so they sent it back 2nd day. As for out of country shipping policies I have no idea but if it's going to an APO it should be no different. So you may want to stress that and put it in big bold red letters. I play WOW on my laptop too.

Well, thanks to Luke, I finally got a reply on what was wrong, well not exactly what was wrong, but what they fixed. Apparently they replaced the motherboard... And it was also shipped last tuesday so all fingers crossed I should have it today.
