4750 & lapcool 2 temps

Just received my lapcool 2 for the 4750. For those who are interested here is a real quick critique.

4750 idling temp without lapcool 2: approx. 48C
4750 idling temp with lapcool 2: approx. 44C

4750 temp playing UT2004 without lapcool 2: approx. 79C
4750 temp playing UT2004 with lapcool 2: approx. 75C

I do not have AS5 on the 4750 yet, but will have it on later this week. Also, I prop up the back of it on a xbox halo case when testing without the lapcool 2.

I ran 3dmark05 professional without the lapcool 2 and had high temps around 89C with a score of about 1436 with default settings. I will run it with lapcool 2 very soon with results.

Also, as far as stability is concerned, the lapcool 2 is extremely light and appears weak; however, it holds the 4750 quite nicely. And although there is much overlap when placed on the cooler, the 4750 is held nicely in place by the rubber pads on the topp of the cooler (even when used at an incline). I will try to get some pics of the setup shortly if possible.

sweet. will the 3790 fit on that? also, how loud is it and how many fans are in it?

If it is those little 40mm ones, they are pretty loud, and dont move too much air. it would be awesome if you took one of those, and got an 80mm hole saw and put those fans on it and ran them off the 5v in the usb port. that would make a HUGE difference.

The 3790 will definitely fit, its extremely quiet, and there are two fans. I'll get you the exact details on the fan sizes and any possible modicications that may be performed...the fans are so quiet that I had to feel if they were running or not. Anyways, the 4750 has its fans running also, which completely drown out any other fan noise.

idling at 48?
Have you installed the latest CPU driver from AMD? Which processor are you using? I have installed the Dec. 2004 driver and am running the program Crystal CPUID which is regulating the voltages of my processor. My idling temp, without any cooling pad, is in the 28 - 31 degrees C range. I reccomend trying out Crystal CPUID. you can get the program for the 4750 chipset here < Note, this links you right to the file!

Another note: I reccomend you make sure you are running BIOS 1.03 or 1.04 if you have one of the older systems (before october) The original fan firmware turned off the fans below 40*C, which would allow the HD to heat up to uncomfortable levels, when you lower your voltage settings using CrystalCPUID. With later fan firmware, this wont happen.

There is a thread on this forum about using CrystalCPUID. You can find it here

Wow. That was a mouthful. I am sorry for hijacking your thread. I didnt intend on writing that much. enjoy your lapcool!

Thanks for the info Wbeck. I am fairly sure my bios are updated, but I'll double check post next time now that you mention it. This is my second 4750 (I returned a previous one) which I received late December; so I suppose I wrongully assumed the latest fan firmware was already installed on it. Thanks again for the links, I'll apply those this afternoon and let you know how it goes. I completely appreciate you help, because I created posts about my high temps awhile back and didnt get any good responses.

take care, and thanks again...totally appreciated

I am absent minded today. I realize you were speaking about the lapcool 2 and not the 4750. Its the 301 model. And to answer an earlier question, they are 70mm fans. I purchased mine from frozencpu if you guys want to take a better look at some pics before I post mine.

thanks, what is the difference between the 301 and 305?

I have no idea what the difference is between the two models. I just happened to get the 301 model because that is what was available at the time I bought it.

the 305 is the same as the 301 except, it has a 7 in 1 card slot and usb ports. plus uses an ac power adapter.the 301 just has the laptop cooler function but doesnt require the ac power adapter. it just plugs directly to your lappy's usb slot. im thinkin of getting the 301.

wbeck,

I just checked post, and I am running recent BIOS.

R1.04
KBC1.00.S2

Also, I have CrystalCPUID, and will make some voltage modifications tonight.

I assume I already have the latest CPU Driver, because when I went to load the .exe file, the uninstall wizard prompted me.

Anyways, thanks for all your help. I'll keep you posted how it goes.

applied new voltage settings

I applied the new voltage settings wbeck linked and NetMaverick had provided, and I must say they made a huge difference.

I went from an idling temperature from about 48C to now a nice 33C. I ran 3dmark05 and got temps of about 51C compared to about 89-90C without the new settings. My score decreased a little from 1436 to 1390, but thats fine with me considering the major temp changes.

I tried gaming a little with UT2004. Before the voltage settings I was getting temps of about 80C, not they are about 48C or so. UT2004 ran extremely well with the new settings...no choppy gameplay. Also, I have not loaded any new drivers on the 4750 as of yet (still using the stocks she came with).
