compaq R3000T series--any comments?

Thread Starter
I am looking to buy the 3000--I am not a gamer so I don't need some of the bells and whistles that come with other machines that have fast processors, I do need a machine with fast processing speed to run highend software in my job, collect large online electrophysiological data, as well as manipulate large image files, and sometimes move rapidly back and forth between several open programs. I don't care that much about weight or battery time since I mostly use it near an electric socket.

The price is right, the online reviews are quite good, but I would love to hear from someone who is using the machine. I have considered other options like the Toshiba satelite A70 or A75 but user reviews are mixed and many are downright bad. I am looking for a reliable notebook that is going to do what I need it to do.

Any comments of any users that read this forum would be of great help to me.

Thank you,
JK

Does battery life matter?

battery life

No, I will almost always be working at home, lab, or coffee shop that has sufficient outlets so fortunately I don't need a battery that last for more than.....1-2 hrs which I believe is the estimate on these.

I have a R3000, and I really enjoy it. I get on average after 9 months of extensive use around 1.5-2 hours of battery life.

I would recommend the R3000Z with the Athlon 64 processor. Upgrading the RAM + hard drive (to 7200 or higher 5400) would definatly give a performance increase.

In terms of reliability, I've had no problems with mine in 9 months. Works just fine.

I would also recommend the r3000z. Mine has been working fine for the past 5 months. The AMD is much better than the P4- better performance, better battery life and also produce less heat. You can also configure with the dedicated graphics(though a bit outdated) will perfom better than the integrated graphics in the P4 based machines.

The compaq is fairly well built and should last for 2-3 yrs without any problems.

I have a r3000z with an AMD 64 processor and it runs great. It can run pretty much whatever I need it to do. I was playing WoW on it last night maxed out and I didnt notice but I was running it on the battery and I got at least two hours on it before it shut off. So that is pretty good.

I have had my R3000Z for a little over a week now and I love it!! The amd 64 processor is fast. I agree to upgrade the RAM and HD to get the best performance. You won't be disappointed with the 3000Z.

I have the T, and a friend of mine has the Z. For gaming, definately go with the T. My 64MB Mobility Radeon 9600 + 3.06GHz P4 purely obliterates my friend's Athlon64 + Geforce4 Go in any game. As for the CPU, the Athlon is noticably stronger, but that lame GPU holds it back. If Compaq had offered the ATI graphics with the AMD processor, I'd have been all over that thing...

edit: just noticed that the dedicated graphics model of the T isn't available anymore, leaving only the totally weak Radeon 9000 IGP. Go with the Z and don't look back.

wtf compaq? couldn't stand having a nice portable LAN monster in your lineup? I have the only notebook in my entire dorm building that can play Half-Life 2 with everything turned up, and they decide to cancel this model...

Compaq 3000 T or Z continued--processor question

First thanks to all of you for your comments, I am glad i didn't purchase yet.

Ok folks, here is where my computer knowledge fully lacking --how to truly understand processing speed.

When I looked at the 3000T I was impressed by the pen 3 ghz processor with hyperthreading technology, but what I am hearing is that the atholon 3700--2.4 ghz processor is better, faster than the pen processor given a sufficinet amount of RAM. In other words, just comparing ghz is not sufficient...!?

Finally, if I go with the 3000Z is 1 gig ram a good place to start with the option of upgrading once I have a better sense of overall performance demands (the new physiological setup I will use this for this laptop is in the process of being set up now).

Care to comment?
thanks again,
jk

Average of different applications:
an Athlon64 3700+ is going to be approximately the same performance as a 3.8 GHz Pentium4; with a couple of exceptions, in encoding and photo/video editing, the P4 is superior, in gaming and scientific applications the A64 is superior.

The 3.0 GHz Pentium4 is roughly equivalent to Athlon64 3000+ on almost all applications.

Pentium 4 in laptop!!! No...

The equivalent of a 3Ghz petium 4 processor is the Athlon64 3000+(which runs nicely at 1.8Ghz). The P4 has to scale upto 3Ghz in order to be competitive with the AMD.. So such high clock speeds results in a very inefficient processor which requires more power and produces more heat..(sign of anything inefficient).

I would stick with the Athlon64 based R3000 series rather than the P4's.

You can configure them with/without the 'shiny' Brightview screens.

I ordered the screen that is not "extra bright" after reading a review that suggested that it doesn't make much of a difference. also looked at some at a computer store and could not visibly detect a strong difference

Do they have a 30 day return plicy on COMPAQ's?

I got a 600m from Dell and shipped it back because i saw there was a better deal

now i am contemplating if i should get the DELL inspiron 6000 or Compaq 3000

i have never used AMD but after reading a few reviews it doesn't sound bad at all, and it costs less..so i might beleaning on the Compaq 3000 more.

ANy suggestions? comments?
