Averatec 3360

I've been looking for a $1K-range student laptop for the past few days, and I stumbled onto the Averatec 3360 (http://www.averatec.com/notebooks/3300series.htm) - It seems to be exactly what I am looking for, and CompUSA has a pretty good rebate deal going right now ($999 after 2 rebates totalling $275, I know that's a lot in rebates, but I am mostly looking at the post-rebate price). Anyway, my question for you all is, this seems to be a fairly new model, does anyone else already have one? I imagine it is very similiar to the 2250 in use and external design (if not exactly the same), but I was hoping for some overall impressions on the 3360. Anyway, if I end up getting it I will do my best to write up my impressions and respond to this post with them for anyone else who is curious.

i am not sure about this exact model but my general opinion of averatec is good. perhaps you can buy it from a place like Costco where you have 6 months to return it just in case.

A buddy of mine has the Averatec 3250, and is pretty happy with it. Got it at Sam's Club for like $900. The only thing that seems is lacking is the battery, but he has the AMD XP-M. I think the Centrino will make it a nice lappy for the dollars. The big kicker is he only paid like $79 for a 3yr warranty from Sams.

That is what keeps it out of the question for me... I am looking for a < 6 lb rig, and I love the fact that the Averatec is only 4.5 - I think I'll order it.

Lemme kow how the battery life is once you get it.

Okay, I received it already (FedEx is the best) - it looks just like the 3250:

I took it to class with me today, and I used it for about 3 hours on battery power, at which time it said there was 25% of the battery left and 1 hour, 10 minutes time remaining; So although cursory, it seems that it will run the advertised 4 hours with moderate use (I was installing programs, setting up VPN for the campus network, and browsing websites).

No dead pixels, everything seems to be in working order - especially the wifi, I was able to detect a few neighbors' networks that were hard to pick up with my PDA wifi, and I was able to connect (although very slowly) to one of them.

I like the case - basic brushed metal look - the speakers are very weak, but I wasn't expecting anything more than that. The initial install doesn't have too much junk to remove, Norton antivirus and iTunes are the only things I removed right away... I don't necessarily like having service pack 2, but it's not horrible. Anyway, there are my first impressions - I hope it continues to be a good buy.

if i was in the market for a mobile 12" non-gaming solution, i'd probably grab one

Very good, thanks for the post, I was interested to find out the battery life. Any problems with whining noises or anything? A user in the Averatec forums reported probs with 2 units from Comp USA.

Whining noises as in the fan? The only time the fan noise was at an annoying level was when I was doing the "fan calibration", and it started going full speed. Otherwise, I have barely noticed it.

screen hissing?

I've also read somewhere that someone had to return their 3360 to compusa a couple of times because the screen or something on the laptop made an abnoxious high-pitched noise. I wish I could find where I read that. That's really the only thing that keeps me from running to Cusa to pick one up!! Keep us informed on how it works out for you Kudy. You're one of the few sources of info on the web for these little centrino avertecs!

I have heard no abnormal sounds coming from it, yet - I hope none start, because the closest CompUSA is not very close, and I would hate to ship it out for an exchange.

Probably nothing to worrry about if you haven't had problems with it. Just keep enjoying it.

I replaced my 3150 with a 3360 from Compusa 4 weeks ago. Had to take the first one back because of 4 dead pixels out of the box. Manager said he was doing me favor taking it back. The second one was shipped with out RAM! Got it straightened out. I love the 3360/ Runs cool, fast and had a VERY long battery life. Averatec support spotty at best howver. Would also like th note book to start up with wifi running. Have to search for available networks each time I boot up.

3360 CompUsa

I purchased one mid January, 2005. Excellent computer, excellent value. No complaints whatsoever. Fast, good battery life, wireless works great. This is about the 8 laptop I have purchased in the past 7 years. I am replacing a Dell Inspriron 8200 with this one. Have not looked back since moving over to the Averatec. I priced a Dell with the same features as found on the Averatec 3360 and it was over 2K (and much heavier). The 3360 is 4.5 pounds. Since I was not familiar with the Averatec brand, I did purchase the CompUSA extended service plan. (I have never purchased this on any computers before but the price was so good, I felt something must be wrong so I purchased this plan just in case). Does not overheat (as some of the earlier posts on other types of Averatec) and the Intel with Centrino seem to work great.

i think the overheating averatecs have something to do with the one based on the uniwill 258kao.

I have one minor complaint to update you all with, incase anyone cares - I can't seem to get the battery to lock solidly in place, there is a tiny bit of wiggling that can be slightly annoying at times... Other than that, I still haven't had any other trouble with it, and I am quite enjoying it.
