CPU Fan Not Shutting Off...

Thread Starter
Has anyone had problems with their CPU fans not shutting off?

About 2/3 of the time, the fan functions normally -- kicking on for a few minutes, cooling things down, then shutting off. The other 1/3 of the time, it'll kick on, and run indefinitely (or atleast until I go in and out of standby mode to 'reset' it.) I know it's running unecessarily by the COLD air blowing out,and the fact that the fan sometimes kicks on like this when the computer is idle or in stand-by mode... Any thoughts? I called Sager support and they said the fan (under the new BIOS settings) should be running 100% of the time. Whatever. If that was the case, I'd be getting my money back, as the fan is VERY loud. (It turned heads in a client meeting!). Is this normal? I suppose I can live with the fan noise, in moderation...

A related problem: the fan kicks on while in Stand-By mode--while in my bag, CAUSING obvious heat issues due to the lack of ventilation....

HELP!

Here's the fix posted by Sager. Also a link at the bottom for the whole thread, you might want to read through it. My fan ONLY comes on while gaming so if your speedstep is working and your fan is still running all the time I'd say something is whacked on yours. I have the newest bios (2.07) so what they told you is not true.

In the CMOS(BIOS) if it’s set on “Maximum Performance Mode Always” it’ll give the on-demand speedstep. it’ll stay at it’s max speed once you unplug the AC power, but once you ran any program even if you just open “My computers” the speed will drop to 600mhz and go into on-demand mode. you can test this by running windows media player and just resize it around and see the CPU speed change in mobile meter, or install / uninstalling programs, tested with many benchmarking software they seem to be very off at the score this is because it picks up the slow speed at start.

if it’s set on “Maximun Battery Mode Always” it’ll lock the speed at 600mhz regardless of battery or AC mode. (Normal)

if it’s set on Automatically Switch” it’ll lock the CPU at 600mhz under battery, and gives the on-demand function under AC mode. this is to give the best battery run time. We will reword this option or just remove it and combined it with “Maximun battery mode always” on next bios update.

No other third party software should be needed for the speed step to function.
