Hmm... GeForceFX Go 5650 huh? Interesting... I wonder how fast it is when compare to Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro.

can't find anything..

I did a search on google etc.. and can't find anything on this i8600, I even checked the Dell forums and could not find anything. The ad looks interesting and I think they meant the NVidia 5600 Go not 5650 at 128 megs. As with the Sentia, I question a release of a centrino when Dothan is due out in October. The successor to the pentium-m, it will start at 1.8 ghz and have twice the L2 cache of the current pentium-m... It would be interesting to see any real info on this machine. If it gets slated for an end of August/september release, I would at least wait for Dothan which will be out a month later... if anyone can find some info. on this new lappy it would be interesting to check out. The pentium-m is a great cpu and the video card will be quite good but with a 400 mhz FSB and Dell's propensity to use proprietary components plus thie horror stories about not honoring their rebates.... it will be interesting to see... what magazine is the ad from?

Rumor is it will be released within a week. nVidia GeForce FX Go5650 is indeed legit, but not sure about the amount of memory or if this is indeed the chipset on the lappy. More intrique... gotta love it!

Dothan has been delayed until next year (Q1 I believe). The Pentium M does fine with a 400 MHz bus since isn't a bandwidth hog like the P4/P4M. Game benchmarks on the Dell forum show that the 1.6 GHz PM D800 is faster than the 2.4GHz P4M Dell i8500. Those two machines are identical except for the CPU and chipset.

Gotta love Rumors, huh? heheh...

This from the i8600 owners manual (Specifications)

Video type:
64-bit hardware accelerated (ATI Mobility
Radeon 9000) OR 128-bit hardware accelerated (NVIDIA
GeForce4 4200 Go, NVIDIA GeForce FX
Go5650.
)

Data bus 4X AGP
Video controller ATI Mobility Radeon 9000, NVIDIA
GeForce4 4200 Go, or NVIDIA GeForce FX
Go5650

Video memory:

32 MB (ATI Mobility Radeon 9000),
64 MB (NVIDIA GeForce4 4200 Go), or
128 MB (NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5650)

Here'a link to the new Manual (It's just a rebadged 8500, nothing new really, other than upgraded video which is a big plus anyway...)

http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems...0/i8600-om.pdf

I don't know what the difference between the 5600 and 5650 are, if any. Anyone who has followed NVidia releases knows they seem to rebadge every factory run anymore.

Maybe GeForceFX Go5650 is the GeForceFX Go5600 Ultra version that we heard long time ago when Nvidia want to come up with something to combat ATI Radeon 9600 Pro version.
Just my opinion....

The 8600 is also covered by the updated service manual.

http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems...0/sm/index.htm

The video card also appears quite easy to replace, although the AW Area 51M still seems to have the easiest design.

Damn..... I just ordered a Dell Inspiron 8500 the other day to replace my now slightly aging Toshiba 1905-S277. Should I cancel & wait? Here is what I ordered:

15.4" WUXGA screen
2.6GHz P4-M
512mb RAM
Nvidia 64mb video
40GB hard drive
DVD/CDRW combo
Mini-PCI 802.11b/g wireless
Windows XP Pro

I also got the 4 year warranty w/onsite service. Total before tax was $2963.90

There was a total of $400 in mail-in rebates. ($300 on the system & $100 on the warranty) so the system price after rebate is $2463.90. Does this seem fair or should I get the 8600? How much difference in performance between the two? Is the physical machine any different?

Actually it's not a rebadged i8500. It has a Pentium M which would mean that's it an Inspiron rebadge of a D800/M60.

Yep, bet it gets good battery time
If you do that, your new order would be processed just in time for you to be faced with the same quandry over the new Area 51M, or the new Compaqs, or the new Gateways, or ....

If you are really concerned, go for it, but no matter what you do, you'll always be about 2-3 weeks ahead of another tech jump. In the meantime, you'll could get your new Dell and be up and running while many folks still hang out here and discuss and debate all the great stuff that's "right around the corner".

The 5650 is most likely there for marketing purposes.

I believe Dothan is delayed until Q1 2004.
