well, 1st off, this is clearly a biased poll since you posted it in the dell forum

I am not a big lover of the HP, I think the evo series is o'k. I just tend to have a lot of problems with HP notebooks. That being said I think the 8600 is a much better deal than the Dv1049.

Yours is better. You have an actual graphics card.

The HP is better overall because is newer, but the 8600 is faster and better for apps and games. But i have to said that the HP lappy is great 2 outputs for headphones and also watch dvd or play music without windows are great.

I'm confused as to how its "better overall because it is newer". For less money, you can get an i8600 with a better processor, bigger screen, better graphics card, better DVD burner, and the same RAM, hard drive, and wireless card. The i8600 is certainly a better performer and a better deal than the HP.

One place I work used HP/ Compaq lappies for years. They recently changed to Dell lattitudes, and everyone is much happier. Seems I always hear complaints about HP.

As for PC World, HP #1 and IBM #5? When I've looked at them in the past, I thought price weighed too much in their ranking. Price alone does not make a good bargain.

Overall Dell is much better than HP in terms of customization, reliability, reputation, tech support, etc. Read PC Mag, PC World, tomshardware, etc...even Carly Fiorina would admit that

I use Compaq's and HP's at the office and would buy a Dell any day.

Too many problems from their desktops and laptops.

My current laptop is a HP...and I loathe it. I have had one problem after another, needless to say I won't be getting another one. I just ordered a Dell so I can't comment personally how I like it yet, but a lot of my friends have Dells and have all been happy with them.

I read reviews in magazines and online and they always really bother me. They use these computers for 2 hours, and then often rank shtty brands above higher quality computers. People read the reviews, go buy these crap computers, only to find that 3 months later they own a problem-ridden paperweight.

I'm not going to say all HPs are pieces of sht (coughcough), but I will say that every single one of my friends with an hp (and in college, there were quite a few) had major problems with their computer and had to buy a new one by sophomore year. My computer lasted 5 years with no problems. Ok, the hinge cracked , but no blue screens etc in 5 years. I bought another dell for a reason.

Compaq, on the other hand

I don't know if HP is keeping the Compaq notebook lines separate after having acquired it, but I've used a Compaq and liked it. Granted it has USB 1.1, no Firewire, not as good of a screen as my 8600, and no video card, but its build is superior to that of the 8600. I easily prefer the Compaq keyboard and the solid feel of the machine. If it wasn't for the $750 off Dell deal, I'd still be using it.
