External CD-ROMS

I just landed on a brand new Sony Z505HS. Its an old model (500mgz) for dirt cheap. The thing is, it doess not coem with a CD-Rom drive. It suggests you buy one of theirs (pricey no doubt and i wonder if they still even make them) that goes in the pcmcia slot.

My friend has an external CD-Rom from her old Dell Lattidude that goes in to a slot that had many many connectors, is long, and has to little release latched on the sides. Sorry I dont know what it is called. Now I see the Sony has the same slot, but they call it IO port and is supposed to hhok up with the supplied port replicator.

My question is, can I stick my friends external CD into that port?

Thanks any suggestions is highly appreciated.!!

I am not too familiar with that IO port you are talking about; however, if you have a spare internal Cd-rom drive, you can buy an external enclosure that hooks up to your usb port. It is fairly big though. I got the Vantec Nextar from zipzoomfly for like $35. I think they sell external slim cd-rom drives for the usb, but I would think they would cost more (convienence=more money=American WAY) Good luck

Well I cannot find an external pcmcia Cd-rom and I cannot get my sony external DVDR rom to work in the usb in windows 98. I cannot find drivers for it.

Is there ANY other way to get windows XP installed onto this laptop?
