Recommendations for Linux-able lappy?

Thread Starter
Hey,

I've been looking around at various laptop specs for about a month now, and I had been all set to buy a Battalion from IBuyPower. Then I realized that ATI is not for me since I want to run Linux exclusively on my lappy. So, I am soliciting recommendations on which lappy to buy. Here are the specs I want to see:

15" WSXGA or WUXGA
GeForce FX 5700 w/ 128MB+
Preferrably a Centrino, or something else with comparable performance and battery life

I'm looking to replace my desktop with this laptop, but I also want to have a good mobile experience so battery life and power are important, and I also don't want a 17" screen as that's just too big for me to lug around. My budget is hopefully <$1500 since I could get the Battalion for that and the only difference I want is the GeForce instead of the Radeon. Any ideas?

Thanks.

It seems as though ATI has a death-hold on the market. Most of the major vendors either offer very very old GeForce's in laptops (HP), or they don'thave one at all. Seems that Sager's 9860 with the Geforce 6800 is the only recent nvidia graphics card available on a laptop... Good luck on your purchase though!

i'd recomend something with an amd cpu (since you'd be able to take advantage of a 64bit os) and an nvidia video card. that combo isn't very common, so at bare minimum go for a nvidia video card. you'll hate yourself if you get an ati since their drivers are so bad. i'd wait for the sonoma-based laptops to become available and then look at the selection.

Dell's M60 fits pretty well. Most everything works. I recommend SUSE 9.2

<$1500 might be tough though. Look for the prices to drop when the M70 gets released (which will be WAY out of price range) and as the Inspiron 9300 (also way out of your price range) is released.

I believe the 9300 may come out first... and next several weeks or so.

My cl56 isn't bad. Ati drivers are hopefully going to start to get better, but for non- games or not cutting edge games programs that use 3d it really isn't as bad as I was lead to believe.

If you lived in Europe you could get the Acer 1524wlmi. AMD 64 and NVIDIA 5700 go with 15.4" WXGA screen.

HP has a linux able laptop for sale, but I cant check on the video card, and the 15' screen isnt widescreen unfortunatly. I believe it is the nx5000.

That being siad, I am personally trying to hold out till the AMD Turion processors hit as I think not only will NVidia do a bit better on that platform, but also I like 64 bit with low power, having had a couple of desktop processors in a notebook I have to say... I LOVE mobile processors
