Asus M6:How to redefine the Internet and Mail hotkeys

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

open regedit
1) go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
2) create a key ATK0100
3) go into that and add two string values:
EMAIL_KEY
INTERNET_KEY

and as the data add the program that you want to run.

WARNING: If the program you enter doesn't exist, the application will hang and you will have to go to the task manager and terminate it yourself, and restart it.

If you want to revert the keys to their normal use (the default mail and internet program) just remove or rename those registry values.

I will be trying to edit the Hcontrol application to make the side keys work with winamp too.

I can't attach images, so I can't so you a screenshot of the regedit to help inexperienced users.

Great work orestis82!

How about a trick to disable the audio dj keys completely?!! I guess we could point the key to a batch file that does nothing noticible.

nah it's not worth it. I work with the guy that hacked Power4Gear to be more pretty, he's given me some info about hacking this thing, I'll try to do it more customizable.

The audio dj keys don't function the way the internet and mail do, they're hardcoded. They check to see if media player is present, if powerdvd is present, if windvd is present etc, and they run whatever runs first.

What I'll try to make is: They see if you have set explicitly a program to run with a specific key, and if you don't they run the default media player.

Give me suggestions about what you think is useful.

Nice! I wonder if this works with my S5Ne.

For me, those keys just open the default internet browser/email client. I use firefox, thunderbird... they work with them. That said, I never touch em! Hehe.

They open the default internet/mail client, unless you do this quick registry hack, then they will open whatever you want

is the power4gear button name POWER4GEAR_KEY? i've only used the touchpad and lan buttons, not sure what else i would ever want a button for...but thanks for the info! i do wish there was a way to turn off the dj keys...it's the one thing i don't like about the m6...i've had it for two weeks, but the number of times i've accidentally opened asusdvd is just silly...

no, the power4gear button is also hardcoded, as far as I remember.

Okay, one request is turning them off. This is easy. I'll do it through the registry though, I don't have the time to make GUIs etc. The only key that will launch a program will be the one that you pull from under the laptop, not the play key. I think that this is the best solution.

Registry keys are more than welcome orestis.... with appreciation.

Turning off audio dj and making the powergear button control speedswitch xp modes instead of powergear would really do it for me.

Oh, and please, if someone has the space and bandwidth for hosting this, I'll be grateful. This server gives me 10MB/month. The file is damn small (28 kb) but still...

Orestis,

I'll be glad to host the file, at least for a while. I'll post a link after we get this finalized.

I've added to the instructions, hope I'm not presumptuous. Would you like to add credits? What about the previous registry keys you provided? Will they work with this file and, if so, should we add them to the instructions and reg files to the archive?

The old instructions work both with this and with the original Hcontrol from asus.

Credits go to Arno, the creator of the Power4Gear extension: http://power4gear.bk-kicks.com/

Also to Oleh Yuschuk, the creator of the OllyDbg prorgram that made this hack possible : http://home.t-online.de/home/Ollydbg/

And last but not least, all the Asus community here at notebookforums.com, that helped make my choice.

Also, some more instructions: This has been patched from the latest (25/1/2005) ATK0100 utility from Asus. Install this before applying the hacked one. It has been checked on a M6Ne, directly form Asus. Let me know if different configurations work too.
