Considering a Laptop

Since I've always had desktops and not much experince with laptops, I figured I'd ask here for a bit of advice. I've always been a bit critical of laptops mainly due to their cost and the fact that the majority of people I come into contact with never use them for their designed purpose. This was before I got the chance to play with my friends laptop. After getting to play with that for a few hours it intrigued me. I'd been rolling the idea around in my head to get something that I could take with me when I go home so that I don't have to lug my desktop around or fight with my brother to use my parent's pc.

What I need is something basic for internet, e-mail, word processing, and occasionally watching movies. My thought was something along these specs:
PIII 700-1000
256MB Ram, upgradeable
10GB HDD, upgradeable
DVD-Rom, upgradeable
Decent Battery life

I would probably be using windows xp pro to start with, but would like to give linux a try on it. I've been looking on ebay for things around these specs, but either the prices are a bit higher than I'd like to pay or there are major problems with them. I know that these specs are a little low for windows xp which is why I'd like to try linux. The only real reason I would use windows xp is because I have a spare (legal) liscense for it.

I was just curious as to what those knowledgable in notebooks think about buying used laptops, and what to consider when doing so. Already having a fairly good desktop, I can't really justify spend lots of money on a brand new laptop just to surf the internet and such.

Thanks for whatever help or advice you can give.

I'm an ex-Dell owner. It might be a little more than you are looking for, but its a great laptop for the money.
