Ok I have one Sager 8887,Now my wife's job is going to pay up to one thousand dollars for some sort of dell computer, yes dell only. They have setup a special site to order from. Our needs are general no hard core use. I do need a serial port for use on the Yacht for GPS input and I like a large screen. After getting the Sager all of the Dell's seem weak. What can anyone tell me good or bad any help would be nice!! Thank you Andrew

The cheaper DELL "Inspirion" or whatever are not really too sturdy, IMO.

I only like Dell's business end stuff (Optiplex & Latitude). Dell basically has TWO methods of FABRICATION:

1) The "good" business stuff THEY do, and they do it well
2) The "cheap" consumer stuff they outsource to some of the same companies that do Compaq's HP's, etc. using whatever crap is rotting on their shelves at the time (ok, I'm a bit sarcastic here).

For $1000, you won't be getting a good Dell, unfortunately. Maybe check the REFRUBS or eBAY or something (if you are allowed that option).

Otherwise, good luck - and stock up on Advil!

that is a nice looking notebook ... i configured it fairly conservatively ... ie, more on the lower end and came up with a $2,626 system w/ PENT M 1.4, 512mb (2 dims), 40gb, floppy, bluetooth, wi-fi internal, etc... PLUS, if you go up on RAM ... wow, they sting you there. I went to CRUCIAL.com and found 1 DIMM of 512mb for $130 ... which seems more reasonable than Dell's RAM pricing. So, to get the lappie up to 1 gb add in another $260 bucks and you're basically at $3,000...

Looks nice but seems pricey to me. The WUXGA might be nice though and maybe that video card but i don't know anything about it and I'm not sure if I see $1,000 more worth in it than others I see around the $2k price point.

But, I guess you have to have Dell ... it does look nice.

Wonder who the ODM is on this one??

The screen is really that good, for games it puts the 4060 to shame..

I'm looking long and hard at a new one coming out from Dell... the Inspiron i8600. It uses the Pentium-M chipset, so battery life will be great -- and it's using a 128 meg NVIDIA 5250 card.

There's a link somewhere to an ad for it.. starting around $2400 I believe.

There's a link to the link. My price was off slightly..

If you can wait for that, you will love it. The screen is absolutely amazing, and ill actually write a comparison soon because my room mate has the the Currect AW laptop, and my girlfriends has the 4060. I couldnt wait, and got the m60, and so far no complaints, and if its the same battary as the m60, and i bet it is, dont buy the modular, buy and extra prumary because it switches out as easily if not easier than the modular

M60 Bandwagon

Kaisooba, I wouldn't get your wife the M60 unless she needs the video card -- ie, computer graphics professional who primarily runs CAD and 3D applications. Instead, I would recommend getting the D800 found here: (it's the one on the left)

http://www.dell.com/us/en/bsd/produc..._notebooks.htm

As you can see, it's the exact same case body and screen as the M60 and for two more days (until Aug 21) has free shipping and HD upgrade. If you find a coupon on fatwallet.com for small business you can get another 10% off your final price and it'll be dirt cheap after your 1000 off.

I jumped onto the M60 bandwagon on Sunday night. Ordered the thing through small business and it came out to 2,886 after tax (w/free shipping and a 10% off SB coupon). I won't have it in my hands for over a week, but I'm sure it'll be a great 'puter And yes, I do 3D computer graphics.

If it's games you're looking for, the 8890 (shipping in 3 days) will be your best bet. Dell can be good, but don't trust their tech support.

if you read the post, you'd see that he needs to get a dell in order to take advantage of a $1k budget from his wife's work.

Dell Business Laptops

Heya--do Dell's business-class laptops (m60, d800) fix most of the common complaints about the inspiron model? (too flimsy, aggrivating keyboard that wears out in a month)

My reccomendation is

im assuming your wife likes long batteyr life and light laptops

600m or D600

1.3 Ghz penitum M (dont let the mhz fool you this thing east 2 ghz pentium4's for breakfast)

lowest ram configurable and ordering a fresh stick of 512 from pricewatch.com or newegg.com

40 gb hardrive 4200 rpm (to reduce the heat proiblem whihc although is not noticible my gf complained a bit so do her friends im guessing its most women who use it can feel the heat)

wifi with a b g configed

and dvd + cdrw combo the dvdrw is ridiculous to have your bette roff getting an external 4x one for cheaper and bette rcompatibility

and on the tech support note after dealing with them for 3 years i can tell you these people are seriously overrated for there tech support but its for a good thing it makes it all so much easier for them to cave and get your thing fixed via home service or sending it in which takes 72 hours TOPS they actually coem to pick it up and bring it back 2-3 days later its quite an amazing service where alienware and sager , voodoo, hypersonic you name it they all lack this kind of service

That's kinda silly comparrison Mav, Dell is a huge company where as sager is not, so you can't really expect that from Sager.

Anywho, for 1k your not going to get a real good comp, but maybe an expensive doorstop
post #17 of 20
See why is it half of the sager lovers are either saying how much Sager ownz everything, and the other half than says what do you expect XYZ are much bigger.... make up your freakin minds.

I personally feel sager offers little value currently on the market. Dell provides a rnage of products from cheap plastic doorstop like 9 pounder laptops to high class high res power machines. If you wanted something sleek and sexy you want a mac no matter how much you say you hate macs you gotta give it up for one damn good design team. The only plus side to sagers I see right now is MAYBE there high res 15 inch screen and the fact that all resellers will upgrade your current model to the current model coming for a modest price but lets face it most of us just want a better graphics card caus eif you wer ea cad guy all you would be using is a Fuji, Dell, Ibm system

Mav,
I don't know ... it looks like to me Sager is offering what others aren't right now and are the first ones to the market. I don't have one - a Sager ... and have never seen one in person! - so all I'm going on is their specs.

But, in my opinion, they do offer a product that others aren't -- IF you want a DESKTOP REPLACEMENT ... then, it really looks like the Sager is a GOOD *POSSIBLE* CHOICE!

But, if you really need BATTERY LIFE, MOBILITY/LIGHT WEIGHT .. then, it isn't the notebook you should get.

I have an 875P based desktop system ... it's not OC'ed but it's running hot just using "stock" settings. The Sager 8890 from the benches that were posted looked good to me ... Yeah, I know - in "real" world ... what do those numbers really mean ... probably not much if you're doing web surfing and e-mail and word processing. Still ... the numbers *are* impressive IMO.

Anyway, really enjoying the discussion about the Sagers and Dells and other "name brands". I don't know if I'll get a Sager or not ... but I do like having the choice of it out there as it makes me think on what I really NEED/WANT!!

thanks -ot

ive seen, fixed, used, bought, sold many laptops and as far as for this kind of situation i think his wife would be really set up and found of a 600m. not too many women are willing to lug around a 10 pound laptop not including accessories and at price point she will be able to configure the 600m for less because the sager is pricey for th elevel of performance she wants. even 2.4 ghz pentium4 is excessive dont you think? i use my sony picturebook for GPS since you can buy a 4x battery for it and using one of the slowest cpus in the word a TM 5600 Crusoe chip running at 667mhz thats liek a penitum3 running at 450 mhz in refrence it does eveything fine choosing minimal options is a good thing
