Problems playing games with i8600

I just got my i8600 here are the specs:

1.6 pentium mobile processor
512mb ram
60 gb hard drive
128mb ati radeon 9600

i just got it yesterday. I am trying to play the simplest game in the world counter strike. I realize that there is some issue with the fan, if i reboot the system and go directly into counterstrike i can play at 70fps solid, then when i hear the fan turn on the fps drop to 10-20 and they won't go any higher. I ran the diagnostic and it came up with an error code saying it expected the video card fan at 6300 and it detected a fan rpm of 0. so naturally i called dell, it took over an hour to get to the guy, i told him my problem over and over and over for about 40 min. he kept telling me the i8600 wasn't meant for gaming. and then he said it was probably a compatability issue with counter strike and to call them. the same thing happens with other games on my system, when i told him that he said this laptop wasn't made for gaming. Well ive played counter strike on laptops 2 years old with specs way worse then mine and they play the game fine. Im thinking about returning it for a refund, because i don't want to deal with them, and on top of that im moving out of the country in 3 weeks, so i don't have a lot of time for the run around. please let me know what you think it could be, he said the fan error code is normal for the i8600. Please let me know if you think its my system or if it can't handle counter strike. thanks

I've got the exact same specs on my 8600 and I've played everything from deer hunter 2005, call of duty, and doom 3 with no problems.

Not really sure what to tell you that would help but I've got installed on mine the fangui program which allows you to set the temps the fans come on.

try something alittle newer and see what you get as far as results go (fps)...also you might try to download the i8kfangui and crank up the fan to high from the start.

ok i installed fangui and for one thing it doesn't show a gpu temperature. secondly i beleive the video card fan is the second fan control and when i go to set it to high i hear a tiny little half whir, like its trying to spin and doesn't. so is it just that my vid card is messed up?

What is the speed of the second fan?

Dell gave me the same bullshit when I called them. Sounds like false advertisement to me because they classify it as 'Better' for Gaming, with 'Best' being the XPS. They're simply trying to sell the XPS to you.

If you've read my CS:S thread in this forum, you'll see me experiencing similar problems. The GPU gets too hot and throttles back.

As for your GPU temperature, you need to turn that on in the settings.

ive been on the horn a few times more. I was trying to work a deal out on a 9200, but they wouldn't give me one. so they told me that a senior engineer will call me monday to talk about the problem so maybe i can find some stuff out. im going to try and play cs without letting the fan come one, because i think that is the problem, but then again its going to overheat, but i at least want to see if the problem is when the fan turns on. Let me know what you can figure out too.

when i try to force the second fan it will come on for 3 seconds and then turn off, the low speed is 1928rpm and when i force high i get the same 1928rpm. but it only comes on for 2 seconds.

holy sh*t i think i figured it out. if i have fangui control my fans then everything is perfect. For some reason if fangui isn't on when my fan comes on it completely slows down my system, even though the temps aren't high. If fangui is on, it can be set to so both fans are on high 24/7 and my system doesn't slow down at all. This is really weird I have no idea why its like this. please respond with your thoughts.

Like i said...but cool that it works for you now!!!

Good that it works for you now. I have an 8600 at the same specs running countless games just fine (including HL2 CS, CS:S), so Dell is just trying to BS customers into getting the far more expensive XPS.
An 8600 with a 1.6 proc is a beast on its own, anyone thinking about an XPS might as well get a 2.0 8600 for a lower price and comparable performance. (IMHO)
