hey, yazdzik (and other AC97 and MC97 users), when i first installed slackware (now i'm using 10.1), i noticed two problems:
- The sound didn't work.
- The processor wasn't throttling.
The kernel is the 2.4.29, so I knew exactly how to solve the processor prob. (kernel 220.127.116.11 vanilla now).
The sound was a little tricky to find out. It seems to me that the first sound card detected is the audio device in the modem (!!!), it hijacks the first sound 'slot' and that explains why i was having the problem 'no mixer elems found' on alsamixer. i found on the net that you need to put this on /etc/modules.conf or /etc/modprobe.conf (depending if it's the 2.4 or 2.6 kernel):
options snd-intel8x0 index=0 options snd-intel8x0m index=1
after putting this and rebooting, i've run alsaconfig and it found my soundcard properly.
The program erased that with some generated code, but i've added that again on the beginning of the file just to avoid any problems on future use. After running the alsaconfig, I used alsamixer to unmute all the sound.
Obviously, try any kernel configurations first, as the people here already suggested, but something is telling me that you may have the same problem! I hope it is!
btw, before configuring properly, i could only access the AC97 mixer with alsamixer -c 1, and now I can use just alsamixer or alsamixer -c 0. If you access your card by using '-c 1' option, i think you have this problem. It's very discussed on the net.
EDITED: just saw mmarkin's kernel config. He ***disabled*** the modem, that's why i think he is getting the sound working fine! at least try my steps to see...
# CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0M is not set
I didn't disable the modem on mine because i still use dial-up (but don't laugh, i will change it soon).
