just a note for anyone else building a SLI rig with the ASUS mobo....to fully enable SLI, you need 2 GPUs (duh), the SLI connector (again, duh). With the ASUS mobo, there is a card (between the 2 PCIe slots) that you have to flip. Then you have to enable SLI in BIOS. Install WinXP and the latest Nvidia drivers and right click desktop and click properties. Click the settings tab on the top. then click advanced. then click the tab labeled GeForce model_name (model name is the name of your card...the GPU, that is) then a little window will appear to the left on your screen...click SLI multi-GPU and check the box that says "enable SLI" this may require a re-boot.

note that all prior info is in the manual...but the next step IS NOT... found that out the hard way

Click the performance thingy to the left and check the box saying show advanced settings....Theres a scrolable box in the middle of the window...scroll down and select SLI rendering mode. make sure it says multi-GPU rendering...mine said single GPU rendering...if that is the case, click the arrow on the box and select Multi GPU rendering from the drop down menu. click apply and your system is fully in SLI mode..at least to my knowlege (after the last step I got a boost of 3000 in 3DMark 03!! this is a majorly important step)

Nice system.

The price sounds right. I configured one from newegg and it came to $1730.00

Difference was I didn't have the 802.11g card and the extra HD.

I love newegg.com...heck, with the exception of the RAM, all of it was ordered from them. another good site is tigerdirect.com...thats where I got my RAM chippies

Despite what case you get, I would definitely recomend the aspire 500W PSU with braided cables...the green UV reactive goodness makes the inside look kick@ss...it took me about 30 minutes to clean up the inside of all the wires and such and to make the grren braided goodness look cool

I have a question, how do you change the drive letters in WinXP...my data drive is C:\ and my boot id D:\...i want to flip em to look more standard...any help?
The only way to change a system drive is to reformat.

I Like NewEgg, but they are charging too much for that Asus board. Buy.com has it right now for 169.00.

You can do this but its not really recommended unless you know what your doing. You need to edit it in the registry, and then also in the Boot.ini. You can look on the net to find the keys in the registry that you can change, I have done it before successfully.

I know thats not the way I say in the past...it was a nice prety window in WinXP....all you had to do was typ the drive letters in...or select froma drop-down....it was a standard windows thingy...the only problem is that i have no clue what it is called or how to access it....

CHEAPEST SLI MOBO

189.00 USD on newegg.com
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...130-487&depa=1

it is made by MSI....I have never used this comany's stuff...so I have no clue how it compares to my ASUS mobo...which is KICK@$$!! I love the overclockablility of it.....*stares uinto the blue depths of the case and drools*...the mobo is VERY stable....much like my other ASUS mobo (socket 754 Athlon 64...I use it to backup files and my dad uses it for important files also...It crashed only once in the year I have had it...that was when I tried to open too many files in about 5 seconds...I was a clicking mofo....anyways...the lower price should look good to anyone who likes MSI...yes, the product is very new to newegg...was not there last week

The DFI Ultra-D board is cheaper. It does not have SLI by default, but apparently making some sort of jumper enables it. Also, you can get the Asus board for 189 if you look around. Buy.com had it for 169.00 up until Monday.

yeah...that reminds me of one thing...I was going ta get a water cooling/peltier system...but DANG!! 100 friggin bucks for the CPU water/peltier block....JUST the CPU blockl...not including the two for the GPUs and one for the chipset.....probably in 5-6 months, i'll get one...if I do, I will definitely post pics
post #38 of 62
Peltier systems are epensive and you have to worry about condensation. I'll stick to plain ol watercooling.

nice overkill on the ram there, and 2 6600GT's thats genious considering it costs the same as and underperforms a 6800GT. i also love the generic case and PSU.

nice motherboard choice though, my personal pick. and get the thermalright XP-90 instead of that Tt junk.

dont get watercooling, get an XP90 with a 92mm fan and push it up to 2.75 like i have it.

PS what brand is your ram, do they have the samsung TCCD chips?
