Which mp3 player do you use? - Page 4

ppl are always concerned with battery life... if you're going to be listening to music for 8+ hours straight away from an outlet i can understand, but how many ppl do that?? 4 hours is more than enough for me. i listen during the day for a couple hours (not straight) and then at night it goes straight to the charger. who really needs 10+ hours of battery life?

I have a zen Touch 20GB and the battery life is great! I dont have to remember to charge it everyday. I bought the Belkin tunecaster II to use it in the truck and it rocks. Sound is awesome I just have to rip all my cds(I used to have around 40 GB but lost them when my raid setup crashed). The creative media software is pretty good at ripping the cds(it automatically insert the ID tags into the ripped files. I was going to purchase musicmatch but it would cost an additional $20. I paid just over $200 with coupons from buy.com. The only downside is getting used to the slide pad on it. Just my 2 cents.

I am FAR from rich.

....I originally bought a 5gb original iPod off a friend for about $100. I've been pretty hooked since, and have "upgraded" twice.

It has excellent battery quality and has AM; I listen to more AM than FM. But I want something smaller and I listen to alot of music: I have about 4 CDs of mp3s. A 10 GB mp3 player would be great. I am more than happy with the sound quality of 128k mp3, esp for portable music. Are there any rumors of a new carbon with a larger hard drive, and possibly AM/FM? I'd hate to buy the carbon then a couple months later the carbon 2 is released.
there have been issues with battery life, but i think those were mainly the early ones. They are finicky, but if you do a couple full charge-discharge cycles, the battery life increases. I consistently got 10 hours on mine. And anyway, 8 hours is better than real life battery life on the ipod, and if you have two batteries, that's 16 hours. Mine came with an extra battery, but I think the option of just changing the battery (while on a trip or something) is invaluable. However, I have heard about people having to exchange their micros, and I actually sent mine back too. The radio just didn't work on it. I chose to get a refund, though. I still think it's a great player, but I want to check out the iRiver h10 before deciding if I want to get another micro or the iriver instead. I think irivers generally sound better.

While I like the carbon, the no hold switch, no radio, and proprietary battery were definite minuses for me. I have heard no plans for a 10gb carbon, but I believe new 8gb drives are being made soon, so maybe new players will come out with these drives.

I don't think youre going to find many (if any) players with AM radio. FM is international and AM is only american, and since most players are made in Asia... Either less motivation or it isnt easy to test the radio.

I care about battery life. I do not want to have to recharge the battery every other day. Battery life start to diminish after about 150 to 200 charges. Thus the less frequent you recharge it, the longer it should last..all things being equal of course.

True the Carbon is not perfect. But pound for pound, it is the best out..IMHO. The ipod shuffle is a joke (no offense shuffle fans). I'd get a flash player buy iriver or another company instead.

Regarding the 8GB drive, will it be small enough to fit in an mp3 player the size of Carbon? I emailed rio support and asked about a future carbon with a larger HD, he referred me to the nitrus or something like that.

I may go ahead and get the carbon. I can get one for less than $200 via a friend's discount

As I mentioned before, I think the carbon is a solid choice, especially for the price. I say get the carbon, I don't think you'll regret it. I consider myself stupid for really looking at the h10 for $270, though I'm sure it will be sold for less. I just love the sound of my iriver flash player.

The new drives (from m1gb up to maybe 10gb) will be the same 1" drives found in the mini hd players now, but I don't know when they are supposed to come out. Probably not until later in the year, and I don't know which ones will be released before others.

Xarthan...

any issues with either the ipod or shuffle with your 700m? also, did you have mp3's stored on your 700m? was it easy to convert them to aac in itunes? thanks.
Well I am not Xarthan, but I have zero issues with my 40gb 4G iPod and 700m...hope that helps...

PS: I had mp3's stored on an external drive...don't use wacky aac or whatever it is called...

The idea is you dont have to worry about the charger. Im sure people could just throw their cell phone in the carger every night, but what if they forget? What if they dont have the charger with them? It depends on lifestyle. You can chill with just a few hours, but lets say someone travels alot or is a little lazy on charging, they would want longer battery life. Personally, I dont think over 12 hours would deliver that much more performance, but it would be nice. Especially how I dont like to plug my mobile devices in alot. (Laptop remains dead 'till I need it, cell phone always on and ready with switching batteries.)

OK, OK everyone...after tons of discussions offline and online, I have made my purchase of an mp3 player. I have selected the ipod 20gb.

The reasons:
1. I have a huge amount of music at 128k, thus 5gb would not be enuff room for me. If the 5gb players supported mp3pro, then that would make things better for me.

2. A friend works at compusa. He told me of the numerous returns of micro due to problems of the unit. BTW, I used his employee discount on ipod and case

3. Carbon has no physical hold button. Thats a showstopper for me

4. The micro looks ugly in real life. The pictures in mags and online make it look nice, but in person it looks deformed.

5. Ipod has a better interface and more solid build than carbon or micro. I can be rather ruff with portable electronix. I have dropped my cell and mp3 CD players quite a bit in the past.

6. With apple's extended warranty they will replace the battery or ipod if there are problems. There is an apple store in my city.

7. With 20gb, I will also use it as a portable hard drive. I wil also store audiobooks on it.

Thus, while I did not want to buy an ipod, it is still the best mp3 player out. This is my first (and hopefully last) apple purchase, altho I wished I had purchase apple stock when it was less than $10 a share years ago . Its pretty sad that no pc or electronic company can not release a truly competitive product after all of these years. Dell's mp3 players are bulky and ugly with a horrible interface. its like Dell is not even trying to be competitive. Sony's are overpriced, proprietary, and bulky...no wonder they are doing so poorly.

Your thoughts, flames, etc?
