I6000 Benmarks/Benchmark Request & Pictures - Page 2

"Dont like:

The carbon fiber quick snap. In theory, its a good idea, but the quicksnap doesn't have the depth of real CF, and therefore loses its appeal, i have it on now, but not sure if im going to keep it."

i was checking out the software & peripherals section at the dell site and noticed that they have a black lacquer quicksnap color kit for the i6000 for $49.95. for some reason, they don't offer that option when you customize your order.

i've only had my 6000 for four days, but the silver paint on the cover is already scratching and losing its luster in spots, just from being in the same bag as folders and paperback books. i'm going to call dell and ask if they'll send me a free quicksnap. they offered me $80 not to return my 8600.

DellAware: what do you think of your screen... is it weird like atrus? do you have wsxga
post #23 of 55
atrus: can you tell us what is your screen brand...
yeah, i have the WSXGA+. and while i'm no screen expert, or computer expert for that matter, i haven't noticed any problems. the screen was a bit dark out of the box, but upping the brightness brought it up to par with the 8600 that i just sent back. i had the base WXGA on my 8600, but i upgraded mostly so i could display web pages side by side without losing much text. at my current settings, things are possibly a bit too small, but i can always up the DPI or increase font size in explorer. having WSXGA+ gives you options.

i really like the new design, but there are problems: both the sagging plastic below the screen and, now, the paint coming off on the cover.
can you post picture of the paint scratch?
no digital camera, sorry. the scratches look like dull smudges on the shiny silver, but they don't rub out. and when i look closely at them, i can see the scratching, as well as other small scratches elsewhere. i know i should probably use a laptop sleeve or case, but this is still unacceptable after just four days of light use. my previous dell laptop, a latitude i should note, held up for six years with only minor construction problems (latch snapped off, plastic casing cracked in one place, where two bays met side by side).

this sux, but it's hard to get a perfect laptop... overall are you happy with it, do you keep it..

...thx

Yea, the CF quicksnap wasn't all that I hoped it would be, but its growing on me, I really like the tri-tone look (silver, white, cf). I have the Samsung screen (SEC3150). The grain, if it is indeed there, is no big deal, and im not returning it over something so small, it doesn't bother me any. I think one in every 3 people ask me about my wallpaper, lol. Its by Greg Martin. i have most or all of his collection here: www.puredesignstudios.com/gregmartin/ Yes, he offers them for free on his own website, so you can gladly take them from mine just the same, I just don't remember what his web address is. His stuff rocks. I can't wait till monday to get my memory, so this thing actually has enuf to run the way it should. I'm happy with everything so far, even the integrated graphics chipset.

What advantage does WUXGA have over WXGA? I realize it is a higher resolution but will it show "movies" and other programs better?

How is the battery life for the i6000 with Wifi on and off?

What is the weight, really? 6.5 lb or 7.1 lbs?

I currently have a DV1000. Would you recommend that I get the i6000?

Getting the UXGA display will give you more real estate, and a lot more at that. If you are looking at the I6000, I would personally recommend the WSXGA. That is what I got, and it has plenty of screen space, and I don't think I'd like having my items on screen being much smaller. I haven't weighed the notebook itself, and I only use the battery at school and there is no wifi there, although i leave the card on, and the battery life seems to be really good, although i haven't measured it, or done any testing. I like my I6000, it does what I need it to do. I bring it to and from work everyday, and have it plugged in at either location. I'm a power user, and use every bit of the 1.6ghz, but it still convenient to carry to class and take notes with.

I am glad it is manageable to carry. I just got rid of the DV1000 and ordered the 6k last night.

I've found that Throttlewatch (http://www.panopsys.com/throttlewatch.php) is an excellent app for watching your processor speed go up and down with use. It's much more accurate than My Computer > Properties.

You guys are scaring the shit out of me. I just bought a 6000, hasnt even arrived yet. I got every option. WUXGA. etc.. You can adjust the screen resolution right? I've never owned a laptop before. What happens if for some reason the screen sucks, will dell refund my money so I can get another computer? I need to be able to type papers without killing my eyes

ckcaal..

i had an i8600 with the wuxga screen, which is the same amount of pixels crammed into 15.4" space. i can tell you that screen was very nice. the colors were vivid and everything was very very sharp.

there are a couple of tricks you can do to make the font larger but if iyou want to reduce the screen resolution, i think it will look a lot less sharp and crisp.

yea, everything will be fine man, chill out, haha. If you need the text bigger, you can always set it in windows, or at least in Word or w/e you're using via the zoom tool. That way you can see the text easier, but I don't think you'll have a problem with it. I believe you can return your computer within 21 days for any reason. Enjoy it.

xp pro

Atrius,

I don't really want to use that xp home that comes with the i6000. I'm gonna blow it away and install the xp pro from scratch and create a couple of partitions. Do you think that will cause any problems?

col.wild,

no problems here.
the first time i forgot to make the partitions when i installed so i had a huge 60gb partition and i'm like.. ok doesnt windows have a util to break off half and make it secondary partition? i didnt find one so.. reinstalled.

doing good with 25/35

Yea, although I got a licensed version of XP Pro when I bought the notebook, and THAT worked fine, but im sure any other copy would work too. Make sure you get all the drivers, and there is a Intel Mobile driver, AND a internal wireless driver, which you can get from intel's site. just a heads up. I have the 60gb harddrive, but I don't really see any point in partitioning it, but do what you like during installation.

Thanks

I have a licensed XP Pro already, so I was hoping that would work ok.

Well, for some reason I like 3 partitions. C:> is for Programs D:> is for 'My Documents' (I like it to live outside of where MS wants it to be), and E:> is a small 1gig parition for creating a permanent swap file, which I find has worked really well for me performance wise.
OH yeah. My Documentes ALWAYS goes on another drive! I've had my desktop location on the F drive for years now, and have prolly formatted C a couple times since.

Have not re-pointed it on my laptop yet but I will.

Did you install all the drivers from Dell's site? There's one file that is called "Dell Notebook System Software" in the Downloads section on their site.. This is like a 42MB file that, when it installs, I see no change at all.
Anyone know about this?

First thing i install after XP is INtel Mobile chipset.

Another question... about the Display Devices.. I see the Dell W2600 LCD TV and Dell 2405FPW(not for sale yet) options... nothing for the laptop LCD, which seems to just be "default monitor". strange?
