5160 vs 8600 vs 6000

ive been lurking these boards for about 3 weeks, while i've been trying to decide what laptop to get.

im waiting for my tax returns, but ive narrowed it down to one of the 3 models listed above..

whats everyones opinions on which they would get if they were getting a new laptop.. im also trying to keep the price in the 1200-1500 range.

i would prefer a centrino chip vs a p4, mostly cause of battery life and temp.

i've worked on both the 5160 and the 8600, and i think they're both pretty good machines.. the real plus of the 86 is the bluetooth and the centrino chip.

i havent seen any of the 6000's in the field yet, so im not sure about that model..

suggestions?

If you were just deciding between the 5160 and the 8600 then I'd say 8600 hands down. And I say that the 5160 is a no-go. As for the 6000, if you dont want to play games then it could be for you.

so the 8600 is better for the occasional game vs the 6000?

so looks like its between the 8600 and 6000..

I wouldnt buy any of those. It would have to be a 9200 or 9300 coming out soon. I have used all of the computers on your list and the 9200 beats them all hands down.

yeah, im also only trying to spend 1000-1500 on a laptop.. i dont need a powerhouse, i just need something for my job.. and the occasional game..

im getting a new laptop cause my old p3 850 died..

so im using it for GPS software, probably PCM editing (once i get my editor for my car) and internet / email.

I got a 9200 for less than $1500 They can be had a for a good deal. I guess the next best laptop would be the i6000 or i8600. The i8600 is outdated though and run pretty warm compared to newer laptops. The i5160 is way too heavy and runs very warm.

Some people like a laptop that is of a manageable size...

As for the i8600 vs the i6000, if feel that you need a real graphics card, go with the i8600. So far, the i6000 is not a replacement for the i8600...

The 9200 size is just as manageable. In my opinion, The i6000 should be more of an 8600 replacement when it gets it's own graphics card soon. The 8600 design is very old. I just wouldnt buy one of those now.

All sources point to the i6000 coming with the mr X300.
The reviews I have read on the desktop x300's seem to have it scoring 3dmark03 about 1800 and 3dmark01 6800,so unless it undergoes a huge improvement in its mobile variant {yeah right}
its not going to play games better than the 8600.
No modular bay, which means no internal 2nd hard drive option,no modular 2nd battery option, probably less battery life from what I've read on Toms hardware site about sonoma and pci'e gpu's.
I just can't understand how this is an improvement on the 8600.
Newer is not always better, not yet anyways

I agree with wooster on the I-8600, and poster I would go for Pentium M as they run much cooler than the P4, the I-9200 still comes with a 715 chipset wheras I have a 2.0 GHZ with Pentium M and 755 chipset. 15.4 & 17" for the I-9200 just isn't that much when your talking a 'diaginol' increase of only 1.6 inches.

19 inches would be a difference but 17 inches is nothing to write home about next to replacement of a 17 inch diaginol with a 715 Dothan chipset. Run SpeedFan and your OS is warm without it both could be running hot.

The only thing really better about the 6000 over the 8600 is the look. We all know the problems with the i8600, they have been discussed to death here but they are minor problems. The 6000 will have problems too, rest assured of that. The only difference there is that the i8600's problems are minor and known, the 6000's problems are yet to be discovered. I'd go for tried and true over latest and "greatest" on this one.

I'd go with the 8600. Mine has run all the application and games I've thrown at it, Plus it has great battery life. If you don't need a power house then the Pentium M CPU will be great. I purchased mine from the Dell outlet for $1394.00 back in June 04.

For occasional gaming? Someone said get the i6000 when it has the x300...I wouldn't advise that for occasional gaming, might be a waste.

It kind of depends on the type of game you want to occasionally play, but based off of what you said, an i8600 with a 64 mb graphics card to save some money sounds fine...

The i6000 at the moment is pretty decent, I'm not sure on its gaming abilities without a real graphics card. It could handle some games, but I would imagine not as smoothly as an i8600. That depends on the game your playing though.

Either would work well for basic things, but with an i8600 you could get a faster processor for a little bit more money.

An i8600 with maybe a 2.0 GHz processor and a 64 mb graphics card would probably suit you well.

I'll agree with forgetting about the 5160.
