Yes. So getting a gig of ram would help the graphics and cpu run at full speed. I don't think xp runs it's best on 288 meg ram, if the video uses 224 and the cpu uses 288 of ram.

If you have the intergrated graphics, yes. The new versions of the 6000 have options for either a 64 or 128 MB video card.

I ordered an I6000 with the WXGA, but then changed my order when the X300 model came out. However, I still received the old order, so I cracked it open just to take a look before shipping it back.

At first, I was quite impressed and almost all of my buyer's remorse was alleviated. However, after using it for a little and examining it more carefully, I did notice the dimness near the top and upper corners of the screen. I had nothing to compare it to except flatscreen CRTs, but overall I was pretty happy with it.

I chose to stick with the WXGA on my reorder for a couple of reasons. One is that I'm going to be playing games, and honestly I thought games looked better running in the native res. I think a lower native res will help games run a little faster and look a little better without having to crank the res up and lose performance. Secondly, my mom will be using the laptop quite a bit and her eyesight isn't the best. If I'm gonna do any serious photo editing I will do it on my desktop.

If you're looking at it for a desktop replacement, I'd go with the WSXGA+.

Granted this isn't the latest and greatest, but its what I play, so I'm pretty happy with the results. The integrated graphics chipset seems to hold its own. I was having problems with the audio for some unknown reason, but I started it up again just now, and it worked fine. I was running the game first at 1024x768x16 with low graphics, effect, etc quality, and then at 1024x768x32 with medium settings. Both of these ran very very well, definately playable, it was only at the high detail levels did the game begin to choke. Anyone who knows BF knows its a memory hog, you need a lot of it to play this game well. And I am running this game with only 256mb of 400mhz system memory! Half of that is going to the video card I am confident that once I get my memory this thing will be flying, which I'm happy about. I'm not a big gamer, but I do enjoy this game. Again, sorry for the shitty vid quality, I can't do any better, just doing this for those dreaming of a new notebook and wantin something to look at. For anyone interested:

Really appreciate these videos. If the intergrated graphics card can do this well, it makes my hopes rise for the performance of the x300. If it ever gets here.... (stuck in boxing).

3dMark 05 results

Well the free versions of 3dMark don't appear to allow changing the settings of the tests so all I can give you are the standard tests that the free version runs.

However, I downloaded and ran 3dMark05 as well and it got a smoking 187 Most of the tests didn't get higher than 1 fps...

Can you please tell us what your notebooks specifications were for this test ?

The Inspiron 6000 Integrated Graphics aren't real direct X 9.0

"GMA 900 was unusual in support Direct X 9.0's Shader Model 2.0 only as far as pixel shaders - all geometry programming was offloaded onto the host CPU."

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/03..._950_graphics/

So I guess that means the i6000 doesn't play direct X 9.0 games. I don't need direct X 9.0 to do everything else. Do I ?

Does it really matter? Any DX9 games would run absolutely horribly, anyway.

For some reason the BF1942 demo won't run on my I6000. I have integrated graphics too, but when I start it up I get an error message saying "Failed to create 3D device." What's going on? Act of War and Mortyr 2 won't run either, but I've played Far Cry, Doom 3, and HL2 on this laptop. What's going on?
