I download them to my harddrive. allofmp3.com is a good place, too.

I used to use Soulseek, then I started using IMesh, and now I stick to Ares.

hey guys, I'm not trying to be mean but we really shouldn't be talking about this here. There were threads on it before and things got really bad. So i recommend that we don't talk about this any more. My $.02

To be honest, those 99cent options are becoming more and more attractive. I Just been waiting to make sure they have a good enough options(obscure bands).

I like to listen to very alternative, unknown stuff and you just dont get much of that on those pay sites.

I am not sure which one I want to go with.. itunes is nice but I am trying to avoid the whole ipod/itunes bandwagon.. but like with Microsoft.. if they make a good product, why not buy it (no, not talking about the crappy stuff).

So what is the best service out there? Surely someone knowss. I dont always know what song I want. I want to be able to listen to songs, kinda like radio, and then decide to download them/pay for them if I happen to like a particular song.

walmart.com has songs for only 88cents and works pretty good....

mayb topic shld be changed to, "where to download LEGAL songs?"
Try out some internet radio, like winamp internet radio, or shoutcast, or whatever, if you want to sample a wide variety of songs and not be illegal.

for legal downloads, i second sonicwind's www.allofmp3.com. it has a lot of songs, is cheap, and you can choose the bitrate the song is encoded in, a big plus for people who are particular about the sound quality. i just get the google toolbar to translate the page for me.

itunes is good, but i will never buy a song from there because of the aac format the songs are in. this means you can (pretty much) only play them on an ipod, which i think is a pretty dirty underhanded trick by apple. That is a microsoft kind of move...

Yes our dirty little secrets are not for the public at large.

It's a pain to buy music today. I can understand the desire for copy protection, but at the same time, I should be able to listen to the music I've paid for in whatever device I want to listen to it without a lot of hassle.

Today, I end up paying for downloads, then burning those downloads to a CD, then immediately ripping that CD to get a version of the music without the stupid license hassle. It's a waste of time and money. I don't want to have to install MusicMatch on every PC just because I happened to buy some songs from them a year ago. I don't want to have to open each song I purchase in WMP10 just to acquire the license so I can burn it or copy it.

It makes me really miss the old Napster.

Don't discount the whole site because you couldn't find some obscure band. There's lots there and what is, is less than 1/10 the cost of what those sites charge. Also, you can make requests and they will try make it available.

Ares is the best. DC++ for everything other than music.

Allofmp3 is good, but they are hardly legal (unless you live in Russia where it's okay) they just doubled their prices on jan 15th too unfortunately now its $.02 per mb (kinda spendy for pirated music, but whatchya gonna do, report that they're charging you too much to download stolen music )
