Tecra 8100 - Screen Blackout

Thread Starter
I've looked for threads on this problem and have found nothing similar, so I'll ask my question directly.

The screen on my Tecra 8100 will blackout at random times. However, the screen is not completely dead; instead, it is as if all light has simply been extinguished. By changing my angle to the screen, I can still see dark grey shapes and movement of the mouse.

My laptop is currently being used as a stationary machine, so it is always connected to an outlet and runs at full power. When these blackouts occur, the only option I have is to hibernate or shutdown the machine. I did discover that changing the properties in the Power Saver program located in the Control Panel seems to help with the problem. I edited the "Full Power"-->"Details"-->"Power Save Mode" options to be "Monitor Brightness: Semi", "System Standby: Never", and "System Hibernate: Never". However, I have had at least once occurence of these options resetting autoamically, and my screen going black once again.

Current specs:

Toshiba Tecra 8100
Intel Pentium III, 697 MHz, 256 MB RAM
11.2 GB disk space
Microsoft XP Pro (v. 2002, SP2)

If there is other information that would be helpful, please let me know. Thanks in advance for any help on this unusual problem.

it needs a new FL Inverter for the screen,

depends where you are some places will cover this issue under extanded warranty. check with your ASP for details.

if not it will cost anywhere from $50-$150 supplied and installed

I have the same type of problem and had to keep pressing that button on top of the keyboard by the screen to try to keep it on. I have upgraded to Windows XP, or I should say my wife did, but did not down load anything from Toshiba. Everything seems to work ok except that one peoblem with the screen. I did go to the control panal and notice there was no time in the system stand by under ac mode so changed it to one hour. Just by quick checking it seems to help, but last time I turned it on I had to hit that button again.

Do I need to download anything from Toshiba and can I do it since I already have Windows XP loaded, or is it the FL inverter as mentioed earlier? It worked fine under Windows 98.

Apparently Toshiba is covering this flicker problem with the FL inverter on selected Toshiba Tecra 8100 models. More info here:
Toshiba warranty claim

Hope this helps
