Centrino & ATI 9700 laptops?

Hi,

Im after a laptop and previously was very interested in the Compal CL56 but am having trouble tracking one down here at a reasonable price.

So if theres any laptops with same or better spec.
Has to have a 1.7 or higher Pentium M (Dothan), and ATI 128mb 9700 or better.

Not to bothered on size screen really, though like to keep it to around 15" screen.

Budget is about £1500 which is about $3000.

Oh and it must not be a desktop replacement, so must be fairly portable.

Once again, Thx for the help

You couldn't find a CL-56 under $3000??? Where were you looking, besides voodoo and falcon? Have you tried www.mwave.com?

Of course, if you have such a large budget, you might want to wait for a new setup with a Sonoma/Turion and X600/X700.

mwave charges only $1410 for a 2ghz CL56 with 1GB of RAM. That's everything maxed out except the hard drive.

Oh I know why. Cux some company only offer 512 MB ddr, they don't carry 1 gb stick cux not much ppl want 2GB ddr. So you only can have 1 gb max. Company like Vicious PC only offer 512 mb ddr for notebook.

The mwave deal for CL56 is Hot! Only comes to $1200 with a 1.6ghz dothan, 40gb 5400rpm hdd, and 1gb of ram. You dont need to worry about 2.0ghz dothan vs 1.6, the difference is hardly noticeable.

The Sager 3790 or Hypersonic CX5 or CQ6 are Pentium Ms (up to 2.1GHz) with 128MB Radeon 9700s.

Yea i have read about this MWave deal, problem is i live in europe so its no good. Thats why i need other suggestions to see wether there are similar ones available.

that deal at MWave is too good to pass up. call the company, or send them an email and ask if you can pay additional for international shipping. even if you have to pay $150 for shipping (which is alot more than i'm sure they'll charge), it'll be worth it to save so much on this great laptop.

This has to be the cheapest cl56 deal out there: http://microexpress.net/prodcustom.asp?linenumber=140 . (for a barebone).

Yes i would buy from Mwave but if i have a dead pixel or something goes wrong with it dont wanna keep paying international shipping fees to get it fixed, as i will have to pay.

got a friend or someone you can trust in the US to handle this for you? have them order it up and shipped to their house. Then have them test it to see if nothing is wrong. of course hopefully this person knows a bit about computers/laptops

beware of import tax (VAT)

Just to remind you Wozza, you have to pay tax on goods coming in from outside the EU. 17.5% VAT payable to HMS customs. That is actually a lot of money. factor that in. You might want to check out ebay uk, provided you know which are the genuine sellers. I got a gericom from an ebay seller, (I know about gericoms.. but i´m just a poor student) 1.7ghz dothan, 512mb, dvdrw, 128mb 9700 for 500 quid including delivery. 6 hrs battery life , 15" SXGA at 2.6 kg. 2nd hand though, but still great deal and everything works perfect. good luck, 1500 quid can get you more than a top end ati9700 or even the i9100 with ati 9800 if you don´t mind the bulk.

if you can wait, get the acer 8100, pretty sure it´ll be less than 1500quid for an entry level with x700 graphics card. or if you don´t mind amd´s, the ferrari retails for about 1300 quid.

I don't know for sure, but laptops and computing equipment in general seems very expensive in the EU. Prices I see here in US dollars seem to be about the same numerically, but in Euros...that means they're roughly twice as expensive...can someone living in Europe confirm this for me?
1 euro = $1.30, hardly what I'd call "twice as expensive" But 30% more is still significant.
