No, it is the workstation equivalent, so approximately equal in gaming performance (with the 6800 probably coming out slightly ahead). It is gonna be a beast for CAD design work...

hey, sakor1, you're from the dell forums.. I remember you (f16 guy).
I am sooooooo psyched for this new system..

Curious about the power brick on the port replicator, will I have to buy new ones for my port replicators? or worse, do I have to buy NEW port replicators for this new system?

I am simply not nearly as cool as you are.. :-) (seriously).. I am going to wait just a little bit, need to wait for confirmation on my options with PCI Express with this system... I keep hearing other people say the 1400 is a huge drop from the 6800..

Sure am. Had to put up with too much **** there from mods, etc.... so frequented here and have been a mod myself in the Dell section for ages. Don't often visit Dell support forum anymore.

No SATA support in the M70, and still a 2GB maximum; wonder why.

I'll see if I can do a side by side review & comparision (like gmnstrunr37's excellent M60/8600 comparision) before I sell the M60.

No SATA because only ONE drive. No benefit. In fact, because of the lack of high speed SATA drives, the PATA drive (7200rpm) will actually perform better.

I don't think 2G is a huge problem. There's likely issues going to 4G anyway (as with most 32bit architectures) ... so you wouldn't get the full 4G anyhow.

The M70 should decimate the M60 by a huge margin. Not only do you have the faster FSB (533 vs 400), but you have the Go1400... which makes the Go1000 pale in comparision (not even a close race, it's like comparing a 6800 with a 5600).

For some, the lack of firewire will be an issue. Not sure why that was dropped.

I have also ordered an M70... however my goal is Linux... I'll post when it arrives (early-mid March time frame).

(I low balled the memory and disk... to save bucks... I'll post when I get the unit, but may not have an ideal configuration initially).

cjox - can you point me to the third party memory that will work in the new m70?

this seems to be a common thing where people order their m60 or m70 with small HD's and small amounts of memory and then buy third party stuff. Any disadvantage to doing this?

cheers,

[edit] just found the crucial site - big cost savings compared to dell - does anyone here know of anybody who sells two sticks of 1GB?

Well it's Friday and I talked to my dell rep today and I was given a 21 day delivery for my M70 and 5 days is I wanted to stay with the m60. I bought the rest of the family 8600s and most of my gear will be in by next Friday. Got a 2.0 M70 Port Rep and D-view, Bay battery, 60Gig 7200, bluetooth, DVD burner, 2 gig ram for $4,620. : )

Hello,

I am a french student (excuse my poor english level), I have few questions about the dell m70.
I need a powerful notebook for my studies, I have to use some heavy programs (solidworks, autocad...). But I also wanted a notebook which allow me to play.
I see some specifications about the Fx go 1400, this card seems to be very good for profesionnal applications, but is it a good card for gaming ? What about the 3dmark score of this card ? Is this professionnal card really compatible whith games ?

I ask a question for people who have a m60 with Fx Go 1000, have you ever play with it, if it's the case have you got any trouble during game.

thanks a lot for your answer

Yes it looks very nice,I'm not going to buy one though until I'm convinced Dells new laptops have undergone major stiffening and casing quality improvements.
I've had three new dell laptops in the last 18 months {I8600,D600,M60 currently}and the case quality of the 15.4 models is pretty poor ,in fact I would rate the 8600 as appalling and my current M60 better but still very very creaky when opened or picked up especially given the price and the fact that its the top of the line workstation notebook.
Cant fault the performance though, and I would think the M70 graphics would be a fair step up again, although the sonoma chipset is looking like not that big of an improvement [I've read 5% faster 10-20% less battery]no sata or raid and that the dual channel memory can't be utilised that well because the 533 fsb is still a bottleneck for that speed memory.
I look forward to seeing some reviews of this model before I fork out more cash.

macfly,
quadro 1000 works well for half life 2,far cry, painkiller.
not so good with doom3,riddick escape from butcher bay, have to go quite low on quality and res on the last 2
Solidworks 2005 is amazing with this card,no problems at all,the realview rendering in solidworks is worth buying this laptop for alone,so I have no reason to believe the M70 would be any less amazing in cad,and probably more than twice as good in games going by the performance of go 6800 ,although I would imagine the clock speeds would be lower for the quadro 1400 given that it needs to be stable for cad and that it is going into quite a small laptop compared to th behemoths that carry the go6800
post #36 of 60
Those "behemoths" that carry the go6800 are behemoths because they HAVE to be. You see, without the Sonoma chipset, those manufacturers were forced to use a desktop chipset with their laptops in order to get a PCI-e bus for the go6800. So you are essentially buying a slightly smushed full desktop system (with the crummy P4-M) when you buy one of the "behemoth" laptops. This is also why they only get about 30 minutes of runtime.

The M70 is Sonoma based, so it should have more laptop-like battery life, yet it will also support newer PCI-e based graphics options, like the go6800 (or the Quadro go1400 in the case of the m70).

need benchmarks of M70 with the quadro 1400..
me too.
We can find lot of tests for professionnal applications but nothing about gaming. I can't find any 3dmark test for this video card
post #39 of 60
It's new and hasn't really been put into too many systems yet... give it some time; I'm sure some of the users of it here will post their scores once the M70 ships. (But that won't be until March.)

Just ordered an M70 in the UK. 2GHz, WSXGA+, 1x1024GB SODIMM, 60GB 7200 RPM HD, 1450 Wireless, Bluetooth, DVD+/-RW (dual layer apparently), second battery & PSU, 3 year complete care multi (theft + accidental damage) for ~£1600 + VAT. They say I can upgrade to a 2.13GHz P4M for another £130 + VAT. And the best thing? They've given me an estimated shipping date of 20/02/2005. I can't wait.

Any advice about the 2 -> 2.13 CPU upgrade? My order isn't going into production until after the weekend, so I need to decide in the next couple of days. I normally buy one below the top-of-range spec since that makes the most economic sense, but £130 isn't much more. Will the extra 0.13 Ghz make any noticable difference?
