if you cant keep the volume up high then get some high end headphones instead.

if you were to buy the network cable and the thumbdrive from a place like newegg, i guarentee you would save atleast $100 conbined.

what exactly will you be using your laptop for in school? like are you going to be a graphics designer, or what? if its just word processing and/or a little powerpoint then that sentia you configured is way too much.

you are right about 2 GIGs not being overkill in time, but by the time 2 gigs are the standard, everything else in your rig would be outdated too. you have a 32 bit processor, by the time 2 gigs are the standard, you will need a 64 bit processor which will result in a processor/motherboard or MAYBE even a ram swap. just get 1 gig and save the headaches now and keep your wallet semi-fat.

and if you want a desktop PC that is affordable, alienware is not the way to go. you could build a PC for $1000 that will still be in the top %80 of other computers out there, and still last atleast a year and a half.
