Temporary screen burn in of the Doom 3 UAC logo from a screensaver I got at Quakecon.
Took about a week to go away. This on a Samsung LCD screen seperate from the system. While permenant LCD screen burn does not occur, temporary burn in can occur. Plasma screens suffer the same problem.
I have my LCDs set to turn off after 10 minutes now due to this.
I remember one of techniques of fixing dead/hot pixels (if it's not hopelessly dead/hot of course) was running a program which rapidly changes colors. Try to exercise your screen, at least it shouldn't hurt your LCD.
I can think of only one occasion where I might have applied too much pressure (air plane carry-on). The ghosting is not showing up on my external LCD. I have yet to try the rapidly changing colors for more than 3 minutes (I just couldn't take it anymore), and reseating the video flex cable. Thanks again everyone.
my hunch is that there is a physical defect. I have an old 8100 and had LCD problems before -- I remember people talking in the forums about a similar problem with water marks along the edges. I think they traced it to too much pressure from the frame on the LCD. But I don't know if it is worth it taking the LCD assembly apart just to check out if that is indeed the problem. I would do a search on dell forums for this problem, try "water mark", etc. If it is under warranty, you may need to claim that you got a defective LCD. BTW did the problem appear right after that plane ride?
Do those marks appear exactly like the icons you were using? if yes, then I feel there is still hope
No, these water marks did not appear right after the plane ride. And yes, they appear exactly like the icons I was using. I might have switched some of the icons in my dock on occasion, which is why they are not visible as clearly as the drakino's UAC logo.
