Compare that 5680 with the M60

Well, the wait for 5680 pricing is over, and I have to say....I'm glad I stayed away. I'd been leaning back and forth between it and the Dell M60 for almost 2 1/2 months now, finally that's over!

The only advantage I could see the 5680 having is in CPU power, but lacking serious comparison benchmarks between the two, even that may not be as great as some think it is (?).

I did my best to get the 5680 to equal what I got with the M60 (minus the incredible screen, gigabit ethernet, and workstation class vid card of course) and it came to over 3,100. I paid 2,800 for the Dell.

So yeah, just had to share my joy.

looks like the 5680 does have gigabit ethernet. oh well.

If your happt now just wait for it to come, youll be elated. But one issue has come up with everyone. In internet explorer images are scaled to match the text, and because of the resolution and junk the images become jagged, but fortunately theres an easy fix

Thanks. I've read all the M60 threads on here multiple times Wanted to make sure I knew where the $$ was going, hehe.

Well good at least your an informed consumer. Congrats and have fun!... If you get a call claiming that your order is gonna come even later than thought (by a week or so) call a represenative because that usually means its late by a day, and they say a week to cover their butts

yup yup. love the m60. i guess Dell has sold more M60's than expected and is trying to offer something similar w/o the video card at a lower price point a la Inspiron 8600. However, most of us bought the m60 for its vid card. =) Congrats to all.

its really funny how they arent marketing the m60 at all. I work in an architecture firm and we get the dell magazine every month or so showing us the latest laptops for architectural professionals. yah right, they are all the low end crap models. I dont understand.
Well technically its a "workstation" I dont think they thought they could sell 'em. They are pricey. Its like running silent...

BEST FEATURE... Only takes an hour or less to fully charge (from when it warns you and hibernates)... or at least mine does..

M60 Owner --- could you post average battery life using the one 9-Cell battery?

Secondly, if you know how much time the 6-Cell adds to the power-time, please post this also.

Thirdly, is it worth getting the 6-Cell, or just as easy to buy a second 9-Cell and swap the primary batteries?

-------------

Comparing the M60 and i8600, how much of a downgrade is the videocard in the 8600? It's an NVIDIA 5250go, 128 megs. Does this do DirectX9? Does the M60 do DX9?

I believe one of the machines will soon make it's way to me -- the m60 is rather pricey, but I will pay if it's truly worth it over the i8600. Unfortunately I have to go chincy on the RAM, and get something like only one 512 dimm (and upgrade a second later).

*Edit - 5650, not 5250

Well, they are marketing in the areas where they assume the M60 will be most influential. I subscribe to a couple film magazines and I've seen it in there a few times. It's also advertised in Game Developer and the M50 was reviewed by GD last year, I assume they'll also review the M60 in the next couple months.

Adobe has also been using the M60 and a couple of Dell desktop workstations to advertise the newest versions of their software.

Alias (used to be Alias/wavefront) demos Maya 5.0 on the M60 when they visit schools or potential buyers.

Both cards are the Nvidia FX series and are DX 9 native. The difference will only matter to you if you do CAD or 3D artwork using software like Maya, 3ds max, lightwave, etc. If you don't do these things, don't bother purchasing the M60 -- get it's equivalent without the card if possible.

As far as your battery questions, I believe it's more expensive to use the modular battery, and (correct me if I'm wrong) you're forced to use the DVD/CD drive externally via the D-bay. The primary battery comes out real easy (not screwed in like Sager's), is cheaper, and allows you to keep your optical drives internal. Plus you get more time with it.
Yeah the primary battery is as easy if not easier to remove than the modular, and lasts alot longer. RIght now im getting about 3.5 hours of web surfing and junk, and about 2hrs playing UT2k3. Only takes and hour to charge, and the computer is SILENT. My sager is loud and hot (a true desktop replacement) this is a laptop.

AND IF SOMEONE WOULD POST MY PICTURES i could take some for everyone

My 8887 was insanely loud (gotta love that exhaust fan burning your right hand). Each time you post I get more excited

Check your PMs about hosting the pics.

Neison, you still lost out in the end due to the massively more powerful CPU (Hyperthreading and 800 MHz FSB anyone?), much better video card, and dual-channel ram of the Sager. The Wide-Angles screen of the 5680 is at least as good as that of the M60, and the 5680 does have gigabit ethernet. Not to mention the greatly superior tech support and warranty of PCTorque/Sager.

It's painful when someone has no idea what they're talking about.

I do agree with you about the CPU, but beyond that you have no idea. Moving right along....

On with more questions about the M60..

I'm reading rave reviews on the quality of the screen/picture -- and we have the i8600 being called an M60 equivalent (minus the video card) --------- is the screen quality expected to be just as high on this machine?

From what I've read on the Dell forums, it's exactly the same except for the video card -- so yes, it's safe to assume the screen quality is equal.

Seems I'll be the owner of a new Inspiron 8600 then.

Is there a release date? I've read within a week, but don't know how accurate that was..

On the videocard front, just how much of a downgrade is it from the m60? The 5650 is still 128 megs, and handles DX9 -- I'd assume it can hold its own?
