Differences between 8890 and 5680 (or what $170 gets you) - Page 2

Ok we really need Adam to clarify this. I do remember him mentioning my specific configuration with dual 60 gig and RAID that the battery life is a moot point for me Of course, I may have misunderstood something so take this with a grain of salt....

Adam please help!

He did just clarify this in another thread on Batteries... basically the combined batteries in the 5680 are 7400mAh (according to his post, search for it) and the 8890 has a 6600mAh.

However, just because one has more or less milliamprehours than another doesn't mean it will last longer. Other factors to include are: Power DRAWN from the unit, screen size, external devices (that optical USB mouse doesn't run on body heat)

And the hardware RAID on my 8890 brutally massacre's the 5670's hard drives... It's a matter of preference: I like 1280x1024. Although, I really wish the 8890 had the wide-angles screen... I'm a picky fellow when it comes to screens.

I picked the 5680 because I have no use for a 2nd harddrive or RAID, so i'll take the slight perfomance hit

i went for the 8890 because in 2 weeks i start my new consulting project in florida. and since i'll be flying out there every week for 6 months, i had to have something to game on and the work Dell laptop just won't cut it. so i don't mind it being a bit bigger, because it's gonna be used for gaming and video editing in the hotel after a long hard work day!

otherwise, I would've gone probably gone with the 5680.

ahhh! the comfort of my big ass gaming cpu in my 8890

Well, THAT'S something I'm gonna be doing every day...

why can't you play two DVDs on the 8890?

or play DVD and watch TV at the same time?

What about Dual Channel Memory

Yeah, it al depends on specific needs & wants...

I really like the Dual Channel Memory of the 8890, this is so much faster!!
the 5680 also has dual channel memory. the main differences between the 8890 and 5680 is screen size/screen type, raid capability, 6 in 1 card reader/mp3 player, and tv tuner. also the floppy is a seperate "entity" in the 8890 and doesn't take up a media bay. i honestly got the 8890 because it came out first...but after looking at the 5680 i think i made the right decision.

not that the 5680 isn't a great machine itself.
Big reason I got the 5680 was because I'm not a big computer head, I don't need a 6-1 whatchamacallit and a tv tuner I'll be using mine for plain gaming and typing, w00t.

Slower pixel refresh rate on SXGA.....
The reasons for my choice (5680):

Things I prefer on the 5680 :

15" Ultra-Wide Angle UXGA > 16" SXGA, IMHO

Dual battery support, hot-swappable batteries, likely less power drain by a small amount

2.5 lbs. less weight, smaller size - yes, I realize it's still a beast, but I think that'll make a difference when I have to carry it around all day at a conference

Price

Features I won't really miss on the 8890 :

Hardware RAID (I wouldn't use it)

mp3 player (again, wouldn't use)

integrated floppy drive

TV Tuner card - a perk, but I'd have to force myself to make use of it

6-in-1 card reader in own slot (not going to buy it)

Features I will miss on the 8890 :

Keypad

Earlier Delivery (this was tough)

Huh? The pixel refresh rate will have nothing to do with this...if refresh rate is high enough to play one it's high enough to play 2. The more plausable reason you can't watch 2 dvds or TV and a DVD is that you can't have 2 devices driving the sound hardware.

also dogg, the screen resolution (i.e. xga sxga uxga) has NOTHING to do with pixel refresh rate. Maybe your wide angle uxga does, but that is not because it is uxga, but rather because it is a good lcd.
