Thanks for all input

I would suggest you install it.. from dell download:" Notebook System Software
(NSS) is a utility that provides critical updates and patches for your operating
system. Install the NSS program to gain support for Dell 3.5-inch USB floppy
drives, Intel Pentium-M processors, CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD drives, Infrared (IR)
communications, and USB devices. NSS is necessary for correct operation of
your Dell portable computer, including the Dell D/Bay, D/Dock, D/Port, and
D/View family of docking devices. NSS automatically detects your computer and
operating system and installs the updates appropriate for your configuration."

probably harmless to have installed, unless you're a fanatic geek with tons of time on your hands to manually update and tweak your system to the gills.

i used to do that but now, you know, i just dont care. got enough power to have a little bloatware take care of the stupid stuff. if you game on your laptop (kinda like datsun racing), you'll want to keep it as clean as possible, yet not be out of touch with updates.

Karna, thanks for your reply. I guess I am a fanatic geek with tons of time to manually tweak my system. I've been tweaking my registry, services, policy etc, etc, etc. Dell's description of the software is kind of vague in what it "really" does. I don't have a floppy, no infrared port, no docking station, I've manually tweaked my USB polling times, my DVD writer seems to be working ok, I've updated the latest Intel chipset, installed catalyst 5.1 drivers (and tweaked the registry after the install). The only thing that caught my eye was that it "support Pentium M". I wonder what that means ?
