I really hate to ask these..............

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
I just stumbled across this forum and I see I wish I did sooner.
I hate to ask these 'lame' questions, but after doing a search for faq's I could'nt find the answers.

What is ODM?
How does it differ from OEM?

I have seen/read some of those 'lists' of different Laptops, but is there a one that lists the orginal builder and who is selling it?

Thanks................

ODM : Origional Design Manufacturer
OEM : Origional Equipment Manufacturer

Most computer sellers buy their laptops from what is called an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM). These ODMs sell their computers to several different OEMs who then install the Hard Drive (usually an Hitachi or Toshiba), Processor and System Memory. They then put their label on it and market it.

Here is a list still being worked on for laptops and their ODMs:

ODM = Original Design Manufacturer

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer

ODMs are companies like Compal, Asus, and Mitac that make barebones laptops (i.e. no hardware/software, typically just an LCD, powersupply and motherboard).

OEMs are the companies you buy laptops from. They are often rebranded laptops from ODMs. These companies add the requisite hardware, software, etc. and sell the notebook as a complete or near complete package.
