D610/D810 Upgradeability?

Does anyone have news on the upgradeability of the graphic card in the 610 and 810? It would be nice to switch out the X300 card in the 610 with a X600.

It doesn't look promising

D610 you cannot. D810 uses the ATI Axiom Format which means you can.

I would think the D810 will get MXM, as it shares the same chassis with the Precision M70--already declared to get the QuadroFX Go 1400. ATI has already produced a X800 Mobile adaptor on the MXM format so they may have missed the boat on Axiom. I'm just thinking that the Inspiron line will stick with ATI's offerings while the business-class mobile gets the NVidia adaptors on their MXM/PCI-X interface. Of course this all flies in the face of the Precision M20, which is very similar to a D610 except that it gets a dedicated GPU, the ATI FireGL V3100 (OpenGL-spec X300 equivalent). The D610 does not have any provisions for using a dedicated GPU.

Damn, yet again it's still too early to make a purchase decision. Holding out on the D810, refreshed 700M, or picking up a used Precision M60.

Well since the X600 is from ATI, that means it will use Axiom. The D610 has a dedicated graphic card option. 64 MB X300, yeah it aint the best. But I'm sure it is better than the GMA 900.

Ahhhh shoot! I was hopin' for 800fsb upgrade in a week or two. Sonoma is so yesterday!! So is PCI-E. I was hopin' for PCI-E-8 combined with 800fsb on some pc5000 ram to get up to maybe a 1000fsb speed ( on the O/C, of course) and push that video up around 1Ghz clock!!

Otherwise...........how else am I supposed to fry my eggs in the morning on my palmrest?? Oh speaking of palmrest......a hear that the new PCMCIA plastic blanks for the pcmcia slot will be made using old Shuttle tiles to prevent the new 10,000rpm drives from causing the left side of the laptop to melt off.

The bottom will still melt like Mr. Bill on SNL, but at least the top side should be OK.

So what's the deal? The D610 comes with either the intel graphics accelerator or an ATI X300 with 64 Meg. So you can't pull the X300 chip and replace it with an X600, X700 later? Is it integrated into the mobo or something?

I'm about to order one to replace my D600 1.8 but all I'm getting are faster processor with faster memory, 2 extra USB ports, slightly better graphics and stiffer LCD lid. Is it worth it?

I actually think I'm gonna call dell and ask if it can be upgraded. I'll let yall know when I get around to it.

Look at the service manual for the D610. I don't see provisions for ANY dedicated GPU; it should be IMA900 only. The Precision m20 however, gets the ATI card.

Go and configure a D610 and it lets you select a 64 MB X300. What part of that do you not understand?

I don't understand how the service manual doesn't illustrate this... and that GPU option isn't somthing I caught between the time I read the .PDF spec sheet and the going online [now] to configure a D610.

Both ATI and NVIDIA adaptors are based on PCI-Express architecture; the difference between MXM and Axiom seem to be the in module design; both are planned as an upgradeable card-based option, but MXM differs from Axiom based on the interface. ATI has already produced both versions of the X800; to complicate matters more, Sager is using their own interface for planned card upgrades in the future. It all depends on the demands of the manufacturer, available PCB space and cooling. Until someone cracks the cases, there's no telling whether Dell is using a common interface with the same GPU placement and PCB or not.

I think we're on different pages. I am useing dedicated GPU in the context of saying that it doesn't need to borrow memory from the Ram, like the IE2 and GMA 900 do. I think your talking about upgradeability. But I'm not sure, Im having trouble understanding your post.
Yea, I'm talking about the capability of upgrading the GPU; I understand the GMA 900 uses system memory allocated for graphics. In that sense, GMA900 gets up to 8.5GB/s memory bandwidth.
