BIOS Clevo D470V <> Sager 4780 ?

Hi folks,

I have one of the many Clevo D470V based laptops (Promedion D470V) and I have a BIOS issue.

My system came with a 1.00 version BIOS, and I have issues such as: a) the keyboard occasionaly freezes, b) graphics do not restore when the notebook goes to powersafe, c) annoying loud beep everytime the notebook boots, etc.

After reading this forum a bit I thought I'd just do a BIOS flash and my troubles would be gone.

However, when I want to flash I get a warning:
"Part ID of System BIOS and new Image File are different (system = 40U, file = 40V). The System Platform may be different from the Image file. Are you sure you want to proceed?"

Of course I answer this with "No" but that does not make my issues go away.

Does anyone know if Clevo actually has a 40U platform? I think it's kinda strange because it says D470V *everywhere* on my system, just the BIOS is 40U. Maybe it was flashed wrong to begin with in the factory?

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Hmmm... email sager...

That might work, I've never tried emailing Sager.

Problem is that I didn't buy my notebook from Sager, it just has the same base (Clevo D470V) as the Sager 4780 (or at least that is what I thought).

Stupid thing is that the company that is supposed to do the support for the brandname of my notebook (it's called Promedion over here) claims that faulty XP installation or drivers are causing my problems and not the 1.00 BIOS. They are not keen on emailing BIOS updates so it seems, that's why I came to try a sager BIOS for the 4780 on my machine, because all the specs are the same.

Guess there is a difference somehow, because of the 40U vs. 40V BIOS ID that is different. Can anyone shine a light on that? Which BIOS ID goes with which model?

Well, my 4780 properties says:

Midern 4780
MIDERN D47U/D47V ... it has the BIOS it shipped with. (Haven't checked the revision lately.)

Prepare to bend over...

Well folks, I've got a Sager (actually known as "Sager Midern") NP4750V (aka Clevo D470K), and have been dancing the dance lately with both Sager and Clevo with regards to BIOS issues. Bought it *exactly* 24 months ago.

First, take everything Sager support tells you with a grain of salt, and get everything in writing (via e-mail). Clevo, too.

Now, I went to Sager for an updated BIOS last month (since they refuse to post it to their website, ostensibly so that customers of other Clevo resellers (Eurocom, Alienware) won't try to use their BIOS, as if it was somehow 'better'). After playing twenty questions with me about what model, what serial number, when I bought it, etc, they finally e-mailed me a BIOS update (2.04a). During the dialog I was having with Sager, they clearly alluded to being the 'author' of their BIOS. After getting it and installing it, I asked for documentation for the BIOS (so I'd know what settings are for what). They informed me that they do not document their BIOS for the customer.

When I upgraded to Vista (Business) two weeks ago, I noted that some apps that (try to) access the ACPI directly couldn't, and determined that I need a Vista compliant BIOS. I went back to Sager. Now, they claim they are not the author of the BIOS, but that Clevo was. So, I approached Clevo.

Clevo informed me that my platform was a discontinued model (not surprising the way the hardware market moves, but it's an Athlon 64 3700... [Desktop chip]), and that all of their Vista compliance efforts were on their current models, and that they have no plans to author a Vista compliant BIOS for my notebook. Needless to say, I was unhappy to say the very least.

I've mentioned to Clevo that nobody will continue paying the kind of premiums for mobility that are currently built into the market if manufacturers don't even provide 24 months of support. I got static (from Taiwan).

Be forwarned. I like Clevo product (although I had to have my system board replaced at 6 months). I don't much care for their channel support.
