what if a powerbook was sold as...

What if you can get a 15" powerbook (the one that retails for $1999) in the following config.

No OS X (-$125)
No RAM (-$150)
No HDD (-$150)
----------------
Total: $1749

now its still more expensive than a fully tricked and loaded Uniwill 258KAO (my current laptop).

Now I'll fill in those gaps with:

OS: Darwin or some Linux flavor
RAM: I have 2 sticks of 256mb and 1 stick of 512 just lying around useless
HDD: 7k60 for ~$160 from newegg.
(lets say if you are not me and dont have extra ram, +$100).

just by getting rid of OS X, installing your own ram (that you buy form newegg) and your own hard drive (which is 7200rpm vs the 5400 apple gives you). you're taking about $200 discount.

Would this option make you more likely to buy the powerbook?

The question is, can you buy a NO-OS, no-HDD and no-RAM mac and get away with it?

Whats he trolling about now? Let me guess, "what if a powerbook was sold as a real computer" or "what if a powerbook was sold as a boat anchor"

Abf please, if you have nothing constructive to add to this new section of the boards, just hit the close section option.

drakino...get a life my man! you can't even see what i wrote and you're already critisizing me. this is a very good question. why are mac sales so stupid? can you build a mac YOUR WAY?
Honestly, abf, i think you need to get a life. No one cares that you seemingly despise apple. Since there is now an apple section on the boards, how about you just stay out of it? Everyone wins. This way, you can stay away from apple, which you hate, and no one here has to see your trolling. Easy enough.

hahahaha

I should put him on ignore too but I'd be even more tempted to insult him when I can't see what he's saying than when I can.

you see my name and automaticaly link me as a "mac basher" this is really a productive question. can you trully customize a mac your way? (and save good money doing so). I would email apple support, but it seems to me that they will only give support to those who joined their mac fan club.

In the form of a question, I guess what you've said here can be misconstrewed as being anti-mac. The fact is, Apple pretty much ignores a lot of markets where people would be willing to buy their products. This is just one of them. I would seriously consider getting another mac someday if I could buy a barebones setup like you described, but I also don't expect this to happen.

Job's is one of the most stubborn people on the planet. He has to have everything done his way, to a "T" even. This isn't to say I don't respect the man.

His question was fine, no anti mac statements in the post
post #9 of 29
I agree, I felt the question was constructive and was eager to see some of the replies.

Way to ruin a possibly good thread Drakino.

I agree, Abf's question was just fine. I was confuse why Drakino was so upset, so I didn't want to be the first to confront Drakino about makng a sene out of nothing. Yeah, it would be nice if we can buy parts and build our own Macs.
actually, 1999 - 150(2) - 125 = $1574. far from the $1749 you claimed it to be. and you may not agree, but os x is much simpler to use, yet has all the features of linux and more.
Dont think Apple will ever let u do that. They make 40% of their profit just on upgrades, OS, and other lil things. But really, why an Apple over PC?

njev...thanks for the math correction. i think i claimed the $1700 with your own parts (ram and 7k60). Darwin is basicaly OS X without the "pretty boy looks" and it is FREE. Linux I think will made the Windows ---> Mac change easier since KDE is so much like Windows in a sence (just like Gnome is so much like Mac OS), it will be easier to use.

EDIT: are there any 3rd party mac dealers who would allow to ditch the OS and the pricey factory upgrades? (and still let you keep the warranty )
yes, u can get systems w/ yellowdog on them, seeing as how u've praised it as a better OS than X i'll assume u know where to find them

Every time I see you post you make incredibly idiotic statements, most of which revolve around "OSX is pretty and stupid and expensive, but Linux is the bestest thing in the whole wide world, and even though half the world is full of incredibly computer stupid people they'll have absolutely no problems running Linux because I can do it!"

This thread just happened to be the first one in which I noticed the dancing bananas hypnotically telling me to reputate you; and who am I to deny the dancing bananas?

Fact of the matter is that you do not buy Apple hardware only to go ahead and run Linux on it. If you're going to be running Linux you're probably not going to go out and buy a laptop that commands a premium price when you can get a cheaper PC laptop that will work the same.

OSX can do everything Linux can do while being packaged in an attractive shell, and while being able to run most major software packages on the market.

Mac users need Linux like fish need bicycles.

don't leave Darwin out. Remember that it is basicaly OS X with a different appearance theme (not Aqua). And I am not saying "osx is the worst piece of sh*t on the market" i am simpy saying that for me, Linux makes more sence because I can get the same productivity, personally feel more comfortable, and save nearly $200 going the Linux route.
u all haters need to stop posting and leave.
but wha if it was sold as a boat anchor, that would just be cool, and what if it worked under water? and what if the fish used it to take over the world

so then why are you posting here? that's great that you like linux, but why do you have to keep making post after post after goddamn post saying how much better linux is???
