Dell confirmed problem with the Radeon 9700

I contacted Dell today and talked with the supervisor of the portable tech department. He said that ATI confirmed the 9700 mibility video card has timing problem . He will tell the Dell engineering dept to work on new bios or something but for now, I'll get full refund on my 9100 since Dell cannot fix this problem. I guess I'll buy i9300 with the money I get.

Thanks for the update. Most of us with a 9100 or XPS are running with the 9800, but that crap issue was the reason I upgraded, although the Omegadrivers solved my 9700 problems until the new card came. Too bad you have to return it, but good luck with you new Dell search!

Why not talk them into an upgrade to the 9800?

Which one is better? Full refund and get i9300 when it comes out or get free upgrade to 9800? Because the supervisor is to call me tomorrow to talk about refund or the system exchange.

that, my friend, is a million dollar question

The 9700 card in general has a timing issue or just yours? My wifes 9100 still has a 9700 and I would like to get the 9800 if possible like mine . Can you give me more information about the errors you are getting so I know what to look for? I am sure that my wife has not noticed but if Dell is upgrading for free or a discount I would be all over that. thanks

I got my system with Radeon 9700 128mb last october. After couple weeks, I ran couple of 3d games and games like CoD, Doom3, Sims 2, TLOTR:Battle for Middle Earth, and 3-D screen savers which caused this system to hard lockup, meaning that i needed to physically restart the system. After 5 months of struggling with Dell support, they finally acknowledged today that ATI confirmed that the Mobility Radeon 9700 has the timing issue when the supervisor I talked ask them. You would have to contact Dell support if you are owner of 9700 and experiencing same problems like mine. Good Luck~

Do you think they would replace our cards with the 9800 because I am having the same problem?
When you ran the dell diagnostics, did it give you any error messages?
Mmmmm. I might pretend to have some problems as well. Cause I am planning to upgrade to the 9800.
I bet the new bios they are planning will drop down the benchmark scores.

Did you see this?

get the refund and buy the 9300 w/ the gforce 6800... the gpu it is better than the 9800...

However, we have no idea where the 9300 will land regarding price. As seen by the new sonoma laptops, the price might aim for the skies.

keep this thread updated please.. I also have a 9100 with a 9700 and would like to see where this goes

Since I switched to omega drivers, I have had no lock-ups...

Should I install Dell drivers and try to get them to lower the price on the 9800?
no offense joone, but a loley dell tech stated this?? I will wait for an official response on this before getting our hopes up.

I also have the i9100 with the MR 9700. Except for my card dying on me back in November I have had absolutely no problems running anything I've thrown at it. On the other hand I am running the Omega vice ATI drivers.

I'd would be interested in finding out if the supervisor even calls.

I wouldn't sit by the phone waiting, because it might be a long one (wait).

Good luck and let us know how it goes and what there offers to you are.

He's to call me today at 4PM and he left his name in case he can't contact me. I used Omega driver after first repair to see if it fixed the problem and after couple weeks, the video card started to freeze again so I changed the driver to old Dell and sent it in the second time. As you see, it wasn't fixed again so I called Dell and they said it was problem with the laptop itself first. But then, just yesterday, I talk with the supervisor on the portable tech and he said ATI confirmed that this video card has timing prob. when he asked them. Well, if Dell doesn't call me today, I will call them and show 'em hell.
