Dell confirmed problem with the Radeon 9700 - Page 3

Good news joonee,

Other than this "timing" issue admitted by a Dell portable tech supervisor to joonee88, there is nothing wrong with this card that the OmegaDrivers didn't fix. I used it for a couple of months before I updated to the 9800 using the Omega Drivers, which is still the current "fix" to this problem, and the card ran like a champ. Even took advantage of the Radlinker prefs and overclocked it a little.

Huzzah to joonee, and to those currently having this problem, jump on this service recall and use joonee's resolution as an example. That customer service rep is wrong, however. This was more of an issue than a "few" 9100's. We have plenty of threads related to this issue on our forum to prove it.

P.s. Don't talk with American support. They will start getting snobby on you. This guy on Dell came up when I called the number nxs138 gave me and he was like "where did you get this number?" and he said that he was going to check this website out after he gets home but then obviously, you could tell that he was already connecting on this website. He was like "you should go to level 1 support". Duh~, I bet anyone on this forum is smarter than the guys at level 1 support. They ask you for the most obvious stuffs. Anyways, I got the call during the conversation with him from Dell India so I said bye to the American system dispatcher or wutever he is and went from there. Man, I though Dell promised 100% customer saticifaction but apprently, from the conversation with American tech, I got pissed off and that ain't no 100% customer saticifaction. He probably is reading these posts. What I want to tell him is "Learn what the customers want!"

Mine froze even with the Omegadriver on my first video card. I sent this in twice so this is my 3rd 9700 but personally, I think that Dell driver should be able to make this video card work since they say that using Omegadriver is going to make your warrenty void.

Eh eh eh! Yep, that's what he asked when I had called up: apparently I wasn't supposed to have this number. He even wanted the name of the Indian tech who gave it to me so he could get that guy in trouble (I did not give him the name). I guess the american (or maybe canadian) support is called level 2. They came through for me when I had to exchange my screen a couple of times, but they do have an attitude.

Anyway, glad you're getting the MR9800. I find that if you are patient with the Indian techs that you will often get good results, even though you might want to curse them out. Enjoy the 9800...it'll do wonders for games.

The only time my computer locks-up now is when I use windows media player for a while or my ATI TV Wonder usb 2.0. I think this might be realated to my 9700.

PS. : It used to lock-up in some games but when I updated my drivers it fixed this.

Keep us posted on this... I seem to be running decent with the Omegas - I was getting the HARD lock with the DELL DRIVERS in games (HL2/Neverwinter). It would be nice to get it all figured out, I was really bummed that it was locking up when I first got my system a little bit ago. I almost put my XPS for sale already. (running with the 9700 128mb) Thanks!!

Could this timing issue be the reason why my i9100 locks-up while im using my ATI TV Wonder usb 2.0?

Wasn't there some sort of deal where Dell would upgrade your graphics card?

I got a call from Mr.Dell's person since I e-mailed about this issue to him couple weeks ago. She told me that I need to download Omegadriver but then I was like wait, that's not supported by Dell. So I told her about the conversation with Indian tech and thold her if he can't resolve the issue, I'll call her back. So, I am waiting for a call from that Indian Manager guy and he is to call me at 5 P.M. pacific. I'll post an update in an hour after I get the call from him.

i know, lol. The infamous Dell has failed me yet again. The Inidian manager, who was supposed to call me 5 PM today has not called me. I called Dell and the Dell philipine answered and said they don't have anything significant on my case log. So, right now, I am about to call Dell customer support and ask them for Dell India's phone number.

Well, I coulnd't get connected to Dell India. They do have it in their record that 'someone' was to call me today. I guess I will continue for my quest on getting this thing repair tomorrow. I am already exhausted from school and this. It's 8:40PM here so I am gonna go do my hw. Wish me better luck tomorrow~

Hmm, I've had the 9700 in my laptop since I've had it and have not had problems until I've tried playing Command and Conquer Generals. After playing for a certain amount of time the sound cuts out and the system locks. I thought this to be because of heat but my temps are in a perfectly acceptable level. Then I thought it to be drivers, so I tried the latest Dell drivers (I was running hacked ATI drivers) and the problem persisted. So I went back and ran the drivers that came on my Dell CD- still the problem. I have not tried the omega's but if there is the possibility of getting a new GPU out of this I'm all for that.

I'm in the same boat as some of the other 'old' guys on here who have had their laptop for quite some time (First week June here-but I got a referb system). I've been running games fine up until recently. Even now Counterstrike Source and Halflife 2 run without error.

Please, can you post more info about this problem? What exactly did you say to dell tech support that got you a new graphics card? How hard was it to squeese it out of them? Any info would be apprechiated.

Well, so far, I found out that the Indian manager did not log what he had told me so I had to start from the middle way. I got a $100 coupon on any product from Dell as a back-up now from the customer care but I am currently waiting for the resolution specialist's call around 12:27 AM CST which they failed to keep again. I filed my complain on this issue from last november so the time it took me to get to this point was freak'n 4 months. I bet that these resolution specialists won't call soon.

I just looked at the Dell support website and there are updated video drivers that came out today. Anybody know anything else about this? I have had an occasional freeze during video games but I don't know if I want to update the drivers... You know, if it aint broke...

i9100
512 RAM
3.2 GHz
128 MB ATI 9700

I hope it's 5.2 based.

All this sounds like the problems that early adopters were having LAST year around this time.

Some cards had problems, some did not. Disappointing to see that the issue came back, though.

The new driver is Catalyst 4.12 based. If you check on the driver for the 9700 in the device manager, it will say the release date it Dec. 07, 04 and 6.14.10.6497 which is same as Catalyst 4.12. The info is found here
http://www.ati.com/support/products/...usdrivers.html

P.S. This driver did not fix the problem neither and Dell is taking shit load of time.... maybe they are planning to do nothing until my warrenty runs out which is Oct of 2005?
