Why do you choose Asus or Compal

Until recently I had decided to buy Dell, but I keep reading how people prefer their Compal or Asus. So I pose a question - since we are looking for a notebook for office work and internet email/browsing ie not blinding speed or the best and fastest graphics - is Asus or Compal or Dell very different in quality and solidity of the notebook itself? Is an Asus machine less likely to give us problems than a Dell? - with its internals, or the notebook itself?

I have asked 20 people I know what notebook they have and all except 1 have Dell and are happy with them.
On the forums however there seems to be more people buying Asus or Acer or only the higher end Dell machines. Why?

Dell in the past has made some very good sturdy computers. But as they have gotten bigger more people have felt that Dell has cut corners and their newer machines do not match the build quality of their past products.

No one can match Dell's price. Then add on the coupons that come and you can run away with a bargain. Dell is a good machine and performs well. But there is just nothing spectacular or innovative about it.

Also, Dell's support has been moved to India which has discouraged people who need help on their computers and have to deal with fuzzy connections over long distance calls with a tech who might have an accent that is difficult to understand or who is simply following a flow chart to debug a problem.

Only the Dell XPS machines has a special support for users and it is based in the US. But this is only for the first month after you buy the machine, then if you have a problem you go through normal tech support.

Asus is renoun for it's build quality and design. They were responsible for the Apple powerbook designs. Compal has also put out quality products. These notebooks sell from smaller 2nd tier dealers or boutique stores. Sometimes you will get better service from a smaller seller than you would from a giant like Dell. Smaller sellers care more about a single customer where Dell cares more about corporate business and you could get lost in the cracks.

Thank you, and thank you Rustican especially. That is a very informative reply. I have contacted Asus and they have sent me the name of one retailer near me, and Compal has sent me three names. I will go check them out, and it definitely means something to me, to buy quality - locally!

There is a forum member here who goes by the name of EricT. He is an Asus reseller. He's been very informative in the past about Asus products. You could try PMing him for questions.

Also delve into the Dell section of these forums so you get a user oppnion of the Dell products. Just so you have a wellrounded view of what is out there.

I think another factor is the user's general level of computer knowledge. Dell pretty much sets everything up for you, which is good if you're not very computer savy. However, those of us who work with custom machines and advanced settings all the time would most likely prefer not having to buy into a proprietary market.

For example, my girlfriend, who knows only the most basic about computers is drawn to the Dell brand and their line of products. My friends and myself on the other hand have built all of our notebooks with "hand-picked" parts and have fully customized our systems for the applications that we need to utilize ( Unix, programming development, gaming, speed ). We have built notebooks from Asus, Compal, Uniwill, and Sager.

Another factor has to do with "standing out." Just about all of the Dell brand notebooks look boring in my opinion. They're basically just grey plastic cardboard cutouts of one another. Not that it really matters, but it's kinda satisfying when someone with a generic dell notebook compliments my laptop which usually offers better performance and looks at around the same price.

Thank you both.
I have read quite a bit of the Dell forum threads, and it did seem that most were happy with their Dells, but those tended to have the 9100 or 9200. And certainly lots of complaints as well. I also really don't like ordering an expensive item sight unseen!

It was when I started reading the other forums, that I noticed a general view that Asus was extremely good, Acer and Compal good as well, and that if peolple had the $$ they would choose them over Dell.
Once upon a time I built my own computer - my first - a 286 it was so powerful compared to the XT!. But now I would rather someone else put it together and fix it if something goes wrong. I would rather spend extra for quality though, and not have to have anything fixed.

I will continue to read the threads, and possibly pm EricT, but I will definitely go to the stores and see the products and hopefully find a retailer I like and trust.

ProPortable also sells exclusively ASUS products and seems to be at the tops when it comes to customer service. Though they are a little pricier than other vendors, I think you get what you pay for in terms of service/quality.

Yep, proportable is one of the more expensive resellers, but their communication is top notch. I talked to justin at proportable on AIM for like half an hour and I wasn't even a customer.

I got mine from c9tech, no complaints, and Sasha's always willing to answer email about machines and prices and whatnot.

You just revived a 2+ year old topic.
