Sony FS550 Review - 56k warning - Page 2

I use my S series precisely for everyday use such as papers and viewing forums. While it does take a bit of getting used to the shorter screen, the keyboad is top notch (especially with a nice keyboard skin) and very easy to do paper, reports and presentations on. But I recognize that it is also a matter of personal preference.

Thanks RIT....yere...I was looking at the HP dv1000...but that seems to get lil hot on the keyboard....feeling it in CompUSA..which had been on all day compared to the S series which was also kept on all day....I also like the battery life..what are you getting in terms of battery life with no power saving features on....everything full throtle..lol....Thanks again..

One of my colleagues has that notebook, and while I like the design that's about it. It seems kind of odd to me that it should generate so much heat as well as venting it through the keyboard. At full throttle I get around four hours or so, but I have yet to actually run it down on with all cylinders going since I usually turn off the things I don't need. The fact that I can get eight hours on a single charge is pretty nice - although that is with the brightness turned low. But again, that's eight hours!

Is that with the dv1000?

lol ive seen acer laptops that are 1200CDN and have more features not just 1999 acer laptops, one thing i dont get is why sony is stupid enough to continue using cheap garbage components in their laptops and charging a rediculous premium? IE: 4200RPM drives... ONLY 4200RPM drives. i understand that sony wants to keep their laptops within budget for production or on maybe the lower end of the laptop market but at least charge accordingly. the laptop im on is only worth 1900 now (from 2600 last summer) and it can blow that laptop out of the water in performance even if it is an older model. also mine comes with a volume thing too! mine fades off into the background as well. people call me dumb because i bought an asus (a brand they never heard of) or cuz i recommend acer alot, im thinking the people that are sucked into companies like sony, dell, toshiba are stupid since they didn't reasearch their options and get TOTALLY riped off. i have no problem with any brand name when they make a respectable product at a competative price but the same companies always show up lagging behind the competition, you know which ones these are

No, the S360. The dv1000 can supposedly get close to six hours or more. However, my colleagues who use it have yet to get anywhere near tha much.

Sony does offer 5400 hard drives as options.

Just throwing a post out there to curb some of the negative light on this laptop. It does have a a few downsides and i'm glad that a few people have noticed the noise when the lcd brightness is adjusted, but there are some things to notice. When the screens brightness is turned all the way down the noise almost completely goes away, which also gives the notebook about 4 to 5 hours of battery life which is great. In addition it sure doesn't have the most impressive graphics out there but believe me it is a step above many centrino notebooks in a similar price range. It even runs the sims 2 at a tolerable frame rate at a nice resolution if you turn off a couple bells and whistles, that is alot more than i thought it would handle giving you a rough estimate of what it can take. I bought mine for under 1600 dollars with a 3 year service contract. So if you are a college student who wants an amazingly quiet notebook with a great screen, and size is a factor (this notebook is very thin) you might just be perfect for the FS550. If anyone has any questions, leave another post and i'd be happy to reply.

Good Luck, finding the perfect notebook for you is hard, but there is one out there for everybody...unless it's hp

Aaron, I've only had 7200 rpm hard drives in my laptops... how do the 4200 rpm drives run? I really like the size/screen on that laptop but I'm concerned about it's slower memory, slower hard drive, and graphics card. I suppose the graphics would be fine for every day productivity apps and Photoshop work.. I'm in college as well and it'd be nice to have something lighter.

not sure how u got that long of battery life with the brightness turned all the way down, it's all i used because it would get to bright, and I could not get anything over 2 hours ON TWO laptops, and i even asked the one guy at bestbuy if others have complained about this and he said many..
go figure..

Has anybody experienced screen flicker / horizontal pulsating lines when brightness levels are turned down?? Has happened on several FS115 (Uk version) notebooks I have seen and makes the notebook completely unworkable against darker backgrounds (blue, grey, green etc) and is visible during gaming / watching dvds.

Any thoughts / anybody have this problem??

Did the FS550 always come with the integrated graphics? I thought it used to ship with the 6200 hybrid.

Actually the FS550 is integrated graphics. It is the FS570 which has the geforce 6200.

It seems that on the Sony site, both the FS550 and FS570 have the integrated graphics and the 6200 is a custom option. Was this always the case?
