wireless question

As it seems it may be a while before integrated 802.11g wireless is available in the new Sagers, what sort of speeds could I expect to get from 802.11b? I know that the theoretical max is around 11mb/s, but what sort of speeds do you guys get in practice? I should be fine as long as I can get about 2.5mb/s when I'm up a floor and across a couple rooms.

It's pretty slow if you're used to transfering files and such over 100 or 1000 Mbit lines...

It's enough to stream mp3's while surfing the net at 1.5Mbps, I'll tell you that.

But I don't sync my iPOD through my laptop (I hook it up directly to the music server) as the wireless REALLY shows it's slowness.

('course, in fairness, a 100Mbps e-net line would ne doggish, too - vs. the native 400Mbps of firewire).

For simple things, only a few hundred MB in size, it's fine. Takes a little longer, but nothing really bad. It's when you get up to several GB that it's painfully obvious.

BTW: my wife has a 802.11g PCMCIA (linksys) card and doesn't fair much better, typically. Maybe because we're in mixed mode.

So, would it be realistic to expect at least 2.5mb/s from across my house?

Theoretically, you should come close; however, real world use has shown it to be approx. 1MB/sec ±...

There are several factors involved (distance, signal strength, etc). The 11Mbps is theoretical max, and while I've seen close to 10Mbps transfers before, usually they're around 5 or 6Mbps for me and my setup.

I can watch movies off my desktop through my laptop thanks to the wireless. It is slow for transferring files (even if its a G card) but its fine for playing games and junk like that.
