ACER TravelMate 8104 "Sonoma" Review - Page 9

AN ACER RESPONSE ON DISK PARTITIONS:

Grrr8t post from Treasureman here and copied in it's entirety.

Originally Posted by treasureman:

"Thank you for contacting Acer America. The extra hard disk partition
called AcerData is included on the factory-loaded software for the purpose
of using D2D Recovery. D2D Recovery is a method of restoring the notebook
to factory configurations without using Recovery CD's. Any data on this
partition can be deleted and used to store your data or you can install
anything you wish. Or, you can get rid of the partition altogether. The
Recovery media restores the notebook to FAT32; this is by design. Acer
does not offer recovery media that formats in NTFS nor does it void the
warranty by converting to NTFS. You do not have to use the Recovery cd to
convert the file system to NTFS. For instructions on how to convert to
NTFS please refer to the Microsoft article at
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;314097. Acer does
not ship anything on the notebook that requires FAT32."

I will ask the forum the questions I asked Acer:

1. If I get rid of the D partition will I have any problem restoring with the recovery CD's?

2. If I convert the C partition to NTFS and only have this one large partition will this be a problem should I need to restore with the recovery CD's?

According to the Acer support answer above I should be able to delete the D partition and convert the remaining large C partition to NTFS and not have any problems when it comes to restoring. However in the large 8104 thread I picked up conflicting info about this in that some said that the D partition has to remain and the D also has to remain FAT32.

So I am confused, perhaps I read the thread wrong or am intrepreting Acer's answer wrong, I don't want to change my system where I can't restore with the recovery disks, but I would like to convert to NTFS and get rid of the D partition.

Any other info I should know before I proceed to delete D and convert to NTFS?

Ordered my 8103 from Spacecentersystems.com. I ordered the 8103 because I want dual channel 2 gig 533 ram + a higher clocked Pentium M when it comes down. I'm looking forward to putting my opinions here as well as I dont see many 8103 members giving info...

Here's to no dead pixels!

This is what worked for me.
1. Buy Partition Magic, or use an equivalent.
2. Wipe out EVERY partition
3. Boot from Recovery CDs
4. Install Windows (create partition)
5. After all Windows/Recovery is installed, Install Partition Magic
6. Resize initial partition/convert to NTFS. Create other partitions from remaining space.
6b. Install Ghost and create image of C and store on DVD or another parition.
7. ????
8. Profit

Thx. Pretty much what I did except in Step 3 I used a separate WinXP CD.

8101/3 vs. 8104

Can anyone give me a bit more information on the performance differences between the 8104 and the lower priced models?

because they share the same graphics card does that mean the performance for games like HL2 will be roughly the same?

thanks

From posts scattered throughout the big 8100 thread and others, people have reported very satisfactory performance, and equal benchmarks, between the 8103 and 8104. Yes graphics should be similar. Mostly a matter of saving a buck or going for the max. You can upgrade the RAM yourself, now or later.

Hi, can anyone clearify me that the weight on this machine:"2.86 Kg"(or whatever acer claimed) does it include the DVD module plus the battery?
if yes, what's the weight without the battery?

6-7 lbs, my understanding that includes battery and DVD. 2.86kg * 2.2lbs/kg = 6.292lbs. The entire shipping weight of my 8104 was rated at 11+ lbs. A recent primary battery (backup purchase) had a shipping weight of 3+ lbs (!?). My bathroom scale is too flaky to weigh these on, even if I hold them.

Hi there,

first of all, thanks to erveryone who has posted in this or the other Travelmate 8100 related threads in this forum. You really helped me deciding which laptop to get next.

Yesterday I received my TM 8104. I must say I´m impressed

It was a pretty good deal for a 8104 in Germany (street price atm around €2400) for about €1970,- delivery incl. , 'used' with warranty (it´s as good as new, smells really new directly from acer europe.

3dmark03 Results

'out of the box' : 5695 pts.
Omegadrivers: to come

Display is very nice (no dead pixels here) and battery life is good as well. Until yesterday I worked with a HP zt3000 series model (1.4Ghz, 1GB RAM, ati mob. 9200) and I clearly feel a boost in workin performance, what a surprise . The keyboard isnt at all so hard to learn as I feared (because of the 5° shape).

The only thing that really sucks, are the built-in speakers at the moment I´m trying to dl the drivers from taiwanese realtek site, but the speed isnt satisfying at all. As soon as I have any improvements on the audio issue i´ll post it here.

Now I´m checking all the posts related to reinstallation and tuning the x700. Call of Duty, Doom3 and HL2 are on there way to be installed on my new 'love'.

I don´t have any flickering problems on mine, but it seems to be that only north american models are affected by that issue....

All these information based on 1 day experience so expect changes =)

Congrats mein freund! Careful on Omegadrivers. I'm a BIG Omega fan, been using them almost exclusively on my previous laptop for 2 years, but the brand-new 5.2s did NOT play well. Couldn't get the control panel right, and did all the uninstalls, driver cleaner, etc. Went back to the stock ATI 5.3 with ATI Control Panel (not CCC, tooooooo slow to load, I tried it). Even DHmod tool wouldn't fix them. Have to check the Omega INF file again, but I don't want to spend a lot of time fiddling with his stuff to "fix" it. Bottom line the X700 should be, I think, listed as an M26 with device ID ending in 5653.

I see you speak german very well MrMsyvc. I went back to the drivers that came with the book. Clocked x700 to 400/384 and got 6777pts. on 3dmark03. But problems with soundcard.

The catalyst 5.3 and 5.4 won´t work, the setup routine stops saying no matching hardware or software found.... [EDIT: ok, first read than post......found the problem in this forum]

Btw, doom 3 runs pretty well (1024x768, compared to hl2 @ 1680x1050 running smoothly ) But finally i´m able to play id´s 'newest' shooter.

Does anyone have an idea to get the fan noise to a reasonable level? The moment i plug in the ac adapter the fan turns on, and won´t stop even if I use ePM and set to lowest cpu clock rate.

UPDATE: as described in other threads, now using RM CPU Clock Utility running at 800Mhz @0,7V but fan turns on every 5-6 minutes. It´s better but far from perfect compared to my HP zt3000.

In actuality "Ich spreche kein Deutche" (spelling?), but during my travels I try to learn at least the rudimentary but polite bitte and danke in most countries I visit. Sounds like you've found all the good tweaks. That RMClock was a real find. Just look up posts by DarthAcer if you want the most accurate tech info. HL2 really shines on the 8104 but the online is too fast for me. I'm currently very addicted to World of Warcraft, which has less of a 'realilty' graphics than HL2. Which "id's newest shooter" are you referring to, the Doom3 expansion? I've sold my Doom3 and never played it on the 8104. Should I get it again?

"Ich spreche kein Deutsch" would be the right spelling, so almost perfect.

I was referring to Doom3 because I couldn´t play it before on my HP notebook. So it´s new for me Now I can play @1024x768 with approx. 40-60 FPS, compared to hl2 perfomance this is sad (the nvidia 6600 go rocks in d3) I´ll play the expansion as soon as I´m through with doom3.

I haven´t tried WoW cause i don´t want to become an addict of an RPG, this could affect my studies. hehe

A wise choice. Now that I'm an "adult" I can do what I wouldn't let kids do.

Reliability and Acer notebooks.

Hello guys,

Haven't had time to read through every single page of posts. Did read through the first 5 just now. Was curious to know from 8104, or past Acer notebook owners, about the relability/build quality of their notebooks. Any comments would be appreciated!

Poll thread here. Scan the big 8100 thread too. DarthAcer has had many Acers. "Most" of us like the 8100s, but some people have had a variety of problems and had to RMA or exchange them a couple of times.

Year-old TM8003 here is humming along nicely. Had zero problems with it so far.

It seems like battery charging/power circuits is the weakest part in Acer laptops. TM800 series owners (I did my research) complained about buzzing sounds when battery was charging. For some it was solved with BIOS update, some others had to exchange laptop/motherboard. TM8000 was relatively solid version. Probably because it was mostly an updated TM800 design. Albeit it has somewhat different motherboard layout.

Did not have any experience with Aspire or Ferrari lines though.

Out of several laptops I owned - Fujitsu, Sony, Compaq, Acer - Sony's had the nicest design/look and screen, Acer's are/were the best "workhorses" for me.

Regarding reliability with Acer, it seems that if you get any issues from the start, it's better to exchange it. If you get a trouble-free laptop, it'll work for you for a looong time. Honestly, that's probably true for most vendors.

Thanks for your input DarthAcer and MrMsyvc!

Have looked over the poll results and comments. Interesting. Well, if I do end up with the 8104 then I hope I don't get dead pixel problems as mentioned. Nor run into any of the other problems. Good news is there are many Acer dealers in my city (Toronto). So it shouldn't be too hard to find a reputable dealer that will willingly exchange a defective one.

Got to go...
