Here is some primary battery info from Battery Mon snapshots. The Motorola is the original battery and the Sanyo is a backup I purchased. Both are getting 3 1/4 hrs on various max power saving settings, 2 1/2 hrs+ without. Haven't done extensive testing.

Can anyone put a screenshot of CPUZ's memory info for an 8104?

TIA

Need help w/ WoW!

I apologize if this is too far o/t for this post, but i've seen MrMsyvc post a few times about playing WoW, and had a question regarding an issue when playing it. I got my TM8104 yesterday, and am ecstatic with it so far! The game looks beautiful and runs smooth as silk! Well, for about 10-15 minutes before the laptop just turns it off. I mean all of a sudden out of the blue instantly turns itself off. I've checked system logs, and there is no record of a blue-screen system error/memory dump reboot, so I have no idea wtf is causing this!

I was thinking of updating drivers, but according to ATI I can't use drivers other than ones from Acer b/c it's a driverset specific to the laptop display, etc. How have others upgraded to the newest drivers? I tried to download the general Radeon Catalyst drivers, which pop up an error claiming "video driver not found", which I figure is its way of keeping me from using desktop drivers for the mobility chipset. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I know there are some of you WoW'ers out there! Help!

Also, could it be a heat issue? I hope not b/c the system is still stock w/no tweaks or under/overclocking or any other modifications to hardware, and no software tweaks to video either. I'm going to post this over in the monster thread (100+ pages!), and maybe might get an answer there too. Thanks in advance!

Edit: If this post doesn't belong here, let me know and I'll nuke it ASAP.

Actually this is relevant to TM8104. Check my post in the thread with poll about BIOS version. I started getting spontaneous reboots in WoW as soon as I flashed BIOS 3C17. All works fine with 3C11.

You can post about WoW to me anytime. To load stock ATI drivers, download the 5.3s or 5.4s, whatever is new, with the Control Panel, not the CCC. CCC is pretty but verrrry slow to open. Get the DHMod tool from DriverHeaven.net. Extract the ATI drivers and run the DHMod tool to set them to X700, then run the ATI install. They should install fine. If you want to be really clean about it, before the ATI install, UNinstall the ATI Control Panel and whatever drivers are present. Reboot the laptop and ignore the warnings about "no VGA drivers installed" or whatever, just cancel out. Then install the ATI drivers. I'm running stock (DHModded) ATI 5.3s. I have had no problems with WoW. It runs great, very occasional pausing\stutter which I consider "normal", and looks great. I run it at max WoW video settings.

Follow DarthAcer's advice about checking your BIOS. Use F2 on bootup to get into BIOS and see the version, or display it via Acer tools. Mine is still the stock 3C11. I think there is a 17 and a 19 out now, but I don't have any problems. I'll eventually flash just to stay current.

Where can I get 3c11 to try it out?

Any advice on where to get 3c11 from? I can download 3c19 to switch back to as a backup (my 8104 came stock with 3c19), but can't find 3c11 anywhere. Also, are the catalyst drivers worth the DHmod? I hear tell of official mobile radeon specific drivers coming out from ATI sometime soon, and was wondering how much of an improvement they'll make considering the stock drivers are less than 3 months old.

Edit: Also, how do I go about enabling "Clear Type"? I've heard it helps the crispness of the text on the display, but can't seem to find it anywhere under the display settings. - Nevermind, found it. Makes a big difference.

Thanks for the CPUZ thing. I was hoping the one page wouldn't be blank though (the part which lists the FSB and all in CPUZ). For some reason it is missing all that info...odd.

Don't have my Recovery CD to see if it's there. Check the various download sites mentioned in different threads. Here is one, if it works:

DarthAcer also posted an ftp site in Europe if I recall correctly. Search for his posts.

Perhaps the utility hasn't caught up with the architecture.

This reseller is offering it for $230 (Canadian).

What are the limitations? Does anyone have a copy of the terms and conditions for this warranty? If yes, could you post it to this forum please?

I'm not familiar with Sony's, but there is a Sony section in the forums here. Search that for info. Good luck!

Hi

I'm considering buying the travelmate 8104... even after reading about all the trouble people have had... but I have one reservation. Does it come with DDR-II 533 Mhz rated ram or does it come with DDR-II 400 Mhz ram?
If it comes with DDR-II 400 Mhz, then I might opt for the travelmate 8103 and upgrade the ram myself. To me, it makes better sense to be able to run at 533 Mhz and sacrifice the modest increase from 1.86 to 2.0 Ghz than vice versa, and I would save $100.

Cheers

533mhz, but be sure to verify with your purchase location for any "anomaly".

Thanks for clarifying. I will probably buy it from newegg as I have gotten good service in the past - but their website doesn't state the memory ratings.

I have another minor (big for me) question. This is my first laptop, so I don't have any experience with notebook hardware and so. Usually, I build my own desktop PCs from scratch and thus I install everything from a 'clean' harddrive. I really don't like all the gimmicks that usually comes with factory installed OS, so I would like to do a clean install on my laptop. But reading this post and the large 8104 post (>1500 posts ) - I get the feeling that it is not as straight forward as I would like it to be.
My questions are:
Is it tricky to do a reinstall? (compared to a desktop)?
Is it tricky to find the new drivers on websites ? (the travelmate 8100 US download section only lists 3 files??? - can you use the european section?)
Do you need to update chipset drivers for the sonoma platform?
Can you use drivers from the original manufacturer or is that not recommended for an acer machine?

I'm planning on using my own WinXP copy (slipstreamed with SP2) for the installation.
Delete all partitions and create one big one for XP.
Install catalyst 5.4 with DHmod 2.2(b?).
Install the necessary device drivers - which ones doesn't work or should be updated on top of a clean XP install?
Undervolt it with RMclock

Buy HL2 and WoW and enjoy my notebook.

I know that was a lot of questions - hopefully someone can answer a few of them.

Cheers
Zak

1. It's not tricky at all if you've done it before. It's our understanding that reformatting to your own style does not invalidate the warranty. Note the 8104 has a 3GB hidden partition for "Acer Recovery", which you'll be wiping out anyway. I totally reformatted and resized my machine.
2. Use the drivers on the Recovery CD to get you started. Don't have mine in front of me but I think the chipset drivers are there also. Pick and choose manufacturer drivers. I'm using stock ATI 5.3s DHmodded. Realtek drivers generally upgrade easily also.

For the most accurate info on Acers, search any thread for all posts by DarthAcer. He has a lot of them, but he is definitely the Acer and general hardware\software authority around here. Good luck!

Thanks for the info.
I'll buy one and jump into it.
If it works out for me, I'll post a dummy-guide to a clean install.

Cheers
