ACER TravelMate 8104 "Sonoma" Review - Page 12

Hey everyone - just joined the forum.

Ordered the 8104 on Wednesday - very much influeneced by this forum and the
http://forum.notebookreview.com/

plus some additional reviews I have read.

Seems that most of the people who have the 8104 are very pleased. But some have had some problems too. Well who doesn't with computers ;D

Anyway - I was wondering - what kind of "test program" would you recomend for me to go through when I recieve my lapdog... oooops I mean my laptop.

Well I guess to check that I recieved all the parts but beyond that.......

If I get one or two dead-pixels are they clearly visible by the eye - or should I go looking for the dead some other way?

Hmmm - wondering also about the hidden partition and FAT - if I change that to NTFS will I lose the hidden partition? And what is all in all there on the hidden part?

Can anyone also recomend a ADSL modem/wireless network bundle to use with the 8104 if I set up a wirless network at my house.

Search the MEGA 8104 thread here for "FAT" "partition" etc. for info on that. You can use the "Search This Thread" tool at the upper right of the thread. Admittedly the thread is so huge it's hard to find the info, but it's all there. Search for other threads too.

You can find free partition utils that will allow you to look at the partition also. The HDD comes with a hidden partition (3GB I think), a C: partition, and a D: partition. Converting any one partition to NTFS does not convert the others. The caveat is that if you convert the D: partition (yes, the "D") then you lose the "easy" Acer-provided recovery method (with exceptions).

3GB out of 100GB is not a huge amount to leave "wasted" and hidden. If you convert the other 97GB to NTFS (from 32K FAT clusters to 4K NTFS clusters) suprisingly you only gain about 1MB total. There are other advantages to NTFS for the connesieur (sp) too.

Bottom line: Unless you like to fiddle, know how to fiddle, and have at least some experience in reformatting and installing an OS from scratch, then leave the hidden partition. Note that the 8104 does not come with an hard-copy CD with XP. You may need to borrow one for a complete, scratch, reinstall.

Personally I have no suggestions for testing or pixilating. Use it, load it, game up, or whatever. See the threads about RM Clock for cpu throttling which gives longer battery life and lower temperatures.

Search, search, search. ENJOY, ENJOY, ENJOY!

Thanks. The "frenzy" for the new Sonoma has calmed a bit, but I'm still enjoying mine. FYI I was using RMClock for voltage control for awhile, then tried the CHC utility. It has a nice interface but the machine seemed to run hotter, so I'm back to RMClock and staying coooool.

Launch Manager

btw have you found a solution to the Launch Manager -problem other than killing the QtZgAcer.EXE process. Downloaded a newer version of LM (maybe) but it still hangs up occasionally. It 's annoying.

Tested also the head phones low sound thing on a train - and yep - I can confirm it. Thinking of buying an audigy -sound card. Besides I'm not the only one who has a problem with the sound -my AVID editing program dislikes the current sound card too.

Hmm about the low sound - I wonder if it is programmed thing to protect our ears or a bug - or just a lousy sound card.

Anyways - otherwise I'm more than pleased with my 8104.

I installed the TM 8000 Launch Manager (from the previous series of TravelMates) quite some time ago, as suggested by DarthAcer, I think in the mega-8100 thread.

By the way, I'm now running a newer version of Launch Manager. I downloaded the latest one for Ferrary 4k series. It appears, in that version settings for initial state of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi made a comeback, so it's useable for my purposes. Plus the warm and fuzzy feeling that I'm using the latest version Besides, it plays a bit better with Wistron CM9 mini-PCI Wi-Fi card that I put into 8104 lately (properly controls LED).

I can't stop tweaking and experimenting

Hello guys,

I am just about to buy Acer Travelmate 8104.
This thread is exhausting, but very helpful...

However, I still lack some information and I hope I will get some answers...

1. Could you write me how long you have had TM 8104 and if any problems
occured(e.g. dead pixels,...).

2. Is it solid enough? I mean if the joints can endure being used for a longer time like 2+ years.... of course with careness .

3. I am very amazed by this notebook and have been watching reviews and so for over 2+ months and just right before my studies kicks off but still
a bit worried if I can rely on ACER brand.

Lastly, how much are you satisfied with your TM 8104 and if not regreting buying it.

Thx guys for replies.

Peace,
Peto

There is no such thing as a perfect laptop. "MY" experience has been:
1. Owned since late January 2005. No one owned one prior to Jan. 2005. I've had no problems, no dead pixels, no nuttin'. As with any laptop you can find in these forums, not everyone has been so fortunate.
2. It seems solid enough. It IS cased in plastic or something like it. I have no idea what it will be like 2 years down the road.
3. I've never owned an Acer before. They make and sell a LOT of laptops (number 4 in the world?? not sure.). They must be adequate at least.

I'm personally very satisfied with my 8104. It does everything "I" need it to. It games like a bandit and has great graphics. It's larger than a sub-notebook and smaller than a DTR notebook, but light for it's size. The speakers are crap but I plug in headphones or monitor speakers and it's fine. I like the 15.4" widescreen with 1680x1050 res, which I always use in laptop mode. It's my personal, unscientific observation that it processes slower (pauses more) than a HyperThreaded Pentium 4, but it will do any tasks satisfactorily. It doesn't lag while gaming. It also has half the weight and more than double the battery life of most HT P-4s. Again, I'm satisfied with the 8104.

There is no such thing as a perfect laptop.

I have a question about the 8104. Does the US version have the DDR2 RAM at 533 mhz or is the slower DDR with 333 mhz?

Thx MrM....I appreciate your quick response with straight answers...that helps much.

I know one needs to be fortunated to get the fine notebook, though you buy even from more reliable companies... but I hope I will be the one with this Acer product...

I am just about to order it ... but have still one question to go and what do you think about extending warranty?

Basic warranty is 1 year due to some circumstances, but if you pay 5000 SK (125 Euro) more, you get 2 more warranty years so it makes 3... and my question is whether its worth it.

Peace,

Peto

Extended warranty can be good for peace of mind at least. Several people in the forums, myself included, have bought it. I bought the "basic" extended and some have bought the "accidental damage" inclusive. Bear in mind that any warranty service can involve long times on the phone and\or long times without your laptop. Sometimes you still have to pay for shipping too. But at least you're covered. I believe that if your purchase doesn't work right, get the company to fix it, and fix it soon. Good luck on your purchase. Let us know how it goes.

Okay - tried that now. Downloaded the Ferrari4000 version of LaunchManager - 1.05.0e but it still hangs up at 99 %

The 4000 version works for me. (I knew it would, it's "Darth-tested".) Did you uninstall the previous LM first? If so, did you kill the qtzgacer.exe before the uninstall? Have you uninstalled the Acer Power Management from Control Panel?
I did not even bother to uninstall previous version - the setup is pretty smart to shut it down on its own.

As to hang up at 99%, there may be several reasons:
- Windows File Protection intervening and asking if you want to replace a system file, sometimes the dialog for that does not pop on top (probably a Win XP bug, should be a system modal dialog)
- confused anti-virus software decided that one of the files is a suspect and should be detained (guilty until proven innocent)
- bad memory stick (then this should not be the first "weird" problem that you see)
- corrupted download - try to redownload the setup

Cheers

Hey guys,

do you have any suggestions how to use my battery in ACER TM 8104 first few days... I mean if its correct to use the laptop just with battery like 4-5 times and let the battery recharge throughout the whole night in order to formate it to the maximum capacity...

Thank you all for replies.

Peace,
Peto

well the original LM did hang up - tried the 8100 updated verion of LM and now the Ferrari 4000 version which is even newer. All have done the same - even if the Ferrari v. has done it a bit earlier than the the other two versions. I did uninstall the LM both times and reboot like the setup told me to do. Memory seems to be working okay. I'm running Norton Antivirus that came with the machine. I do still use the Acer Power Managment.

qtzgacer.exe seems just to eat up the 98-99 % - before I kill it - but not every time - okay the Ferrari version did do that every time - but didn't have that for long - have unistalled it now.

Maybe I should write a nice email to Acer on Monday?
