I am starting to be worried. I had 2 shut downs after 2 hours of play in last 3 days while I was playing Matrix Online...I play it on max details, thought I think this PC can do more...

Anyway, I have had those shutdowns...and thats bad...so I installed Notebook Hardware Control to see whats the temperature like...I set all to max as usually and checked my CPU temp, it was 91 C...gosh...

I think this is not normal, even the CPU is fully loaded.

Therefore I would like to ask MrMsyvc and other guys, what do you think about that? Could it be the dust in the fan? I have some EXP that dust in the fun makes troubles,e.g. CPU temp fell to regular values after I cleaned my P4 desktop CPU cooler.

I dont know....its even a winter so it should be easier for PC to keep cooler and I have played many games(FEAR,WOW)...and havent had such a problem. Do you think that something might have gone wrong with the laptop?

Also, now I see that my CPU temperature is 60C and just surfing the web...and have more windows opened.

I hope I'll get some help here.

THX,
PETO
Yes, 91C is right around the CPU shutdown temp. Run MobileMeter so you can see your temps graphed over time. Try a dust blowout, though many of us have experienced little or no dust in our 8104s. (Pull all the bottom plates as well as the CD drive, get a can of compressed air, and have at it.)

Mine runs at 47C normal operation, with periodic spikes to 54-56C for some unknown utility. I game consistently, all games, at 70-72C. Maybe 6 months ago I ONCE hit 80C when I was fiddling with something (?), but it never happened again. I personally run RMClock as I've found NHC too performance-intensive. I haven't played Matrix Online but I've run COD2, WoW, HL2 and quite a few others satisfactorily, all at the same 70-72C. FEAR ran poorly for me but everything else runs fine. If I have performance problems I shut off unnecessary programs and threads in Task Manager, such as Touchpad, Soundman, ATI progs, sometimes antivirus and wireless if I'm not online. Good luck.

Thank you for your quick reply. Yes I played COD too and it was very demanding. As far as I remember the tempreture was as you said about 72C when it was fully loaded...so its not right.

BTW, I have my "lapdog" mostly on my legs, but that should not make such a big difference, cuz I tested Matrix Onlineon my legs and on the table and it was the same temp - 91 after 13 mins of play...

I hope its dust, but I think I should rather take it to the professional and have it cleaned,no?

BTW MrM do you run your TM 8104 on 48C when you have your CPU set to 2GHz ?

Good question, since my 48C is mostly at 800Mhz, and my 70-72C gaming is at 2Ghz, using RMClock. I just set it to Max Performance while doing this "regular" computing and we'll see what it is for a short test.

Have it cleaned professionally as you see necessary. I can't guarantee results or lack of damage from personal cleaning, but "generally" you can use canned compressed air bought at a computer store (NOT from a motorized compressor) without damage. Blow into the fan intake, toward the output vent. Blow through the empty CD drive bay toward the output vent, and unscrew the plates on the back and blow toward the vent.

This brings to mind the fact that your fan may not be working at all, or not at full speed. Can you feel air coming out the vent on the left side? Fan failure is a common reason for increased high temps. Also, I'd try some other games, even ones you've played before, and see if the temps are high for them also. This way we can tell if it is more hardware (bad fan or something) or somehow that game is maxing the CPU.

My temp during this writing, over 10 minutes or so with interruptions and with no intensive software running, has only been 51-52C at 2Ghz.

So..I have few windows opened nad having run just ICQ and Mobile Meter or what its called, and I am connected to internet via Wifi...I am running on 666-733 Mhz and the temperature goes approx to 45, when the fan turns of and then slowly goes to approx 53 when it turns on...and this is repeating...I am not doing anything..just writing ICQ msg from time to time...

Also I have tried CoD2 at high settings(2x anisop, 1280*768....)...I had about 12 fps and after 10 mins of play it was at its max about 84-5 C...

Well the fan is working and you can hear quite a bit when demanding performance from this machine and the air that goes out of the PC from the left is pretty hot...

I have like 41 process running and HDD temp is 37, CPU stays more-over on 46C till the fan goes out
post #287 of 293
here are the CoD2 settings I tried it on and had 85C after 10mins:
Video Mode: 1280x768
Screen hz: 60
Aspect ratio: Auto
Texture filter: Anisotropic
Anti-alias : 2x
Render.method pref: Auto
Sync every frame : no
Optim for SLI: no
shadows: YEs
Number of dyn.lights: HIGH
soften smoke edges: World only
Number of corpses: Small
Texture Quality : Automatic

so MrmM if you have CoD2 pls give it a try and look at temp of CPU after 9 mins of play...

thx very much

Writing again...so the cooling of the CPU is likely not to be the problem, cuz I was playing MxO again and checked temp of CPU after 20 mins of Gameplay and it was to my astonishment just on 64C, but then I checked my ATI preferences and noticed that ATI X700 was set to balanced performance....

so I set it to max, and the ACPI temperature or what it is jumped again to 93C in 10 mins of play...

SO? might be sometthing wrong with cooling of ATI X700?

I don't have COD2 anymore, but I'm pretty sure it ran at 70-72C like all the others I've ever played.

My ATI Powerplay is set to "Plugged In - Optimal Performance" (the maximum, whereas yours is at Balanced) and "Running on batteries - Balanced".

Are you running on AC, plugged in, and NOT running on batteries??? Personally I don't game at all on batteries as I've found my previous laptop ran VERRRRRY hot when doing so. I don't recommend it.

Get your laptop cleaned, try again, then consider Tech Support. I'm out of ideas but of course you should always surf the forums here.

Yes...I am running on AC...
and when I run with BALANCED settings on ATI it was 65 C
and when on max as you and I mostly play was 93C
after 10 mins of play...

So it must be the GRAPHICS,no?

Seems like it.

So MrM I just want to tell you that I used hoover to clean the fan, though there were really small signs of any dust...a bit on the fan.

However my SYSTEM cpu hasnt gone higher than 85C when playing since yesterday's clean, so it helped at least 8C on average...so Now I am going for your suggestion = compressed oxygen...I hope It will not get over 80 after that.

I no 85 its very much, but I am kinda surprised how big effect (8-15C decrease) removal of such a small amount of dust has had on my laptop...

I hope the temperature will be as yours MrM (74C) and thus its not a hardware fault.

THX....
