Acer Travelmate noisy fan? 81xx, 4xxx, 32xx?

Well I got the new 3201Xci and I love everything about this laptop except one thing... the cpu fan. Before I send it to Acer support center to have them take a look at the problem or possible exchange I wanted to ask other fellow Travelmate owners about your laptops.

From my observations so far, the fan is as noisy as M6NBe at full speed, but the beauty of M6NBe was that the fan was not running at all when I was doing non cpu intensive work on it.

If I use Acer's powermanagement which does not have dynamic cpu switching it's very inconvenient to switch between Low & Max CPU speeds, but I resolved this issue by runing SpeedstepXP.

If I keep it at Max CPU the fan does not turn off at all and if I keep it at low the fan will still turn on, but every 5 mins or so. Even if I am not doing anything on a laptop I see the cpu temp go up to 55 the fan turns on and 30 seconds later or at when the temp shows 49 it will turn off.

Is that something normal? Please help me out here

If you looke at the picture, this is how the temp goes up and then down while idle.

My 8104 is not "noisy". You can hear it but it's a pretty low sound. It's similar in the other respects (haven't done an idle test but I'm running MobMeter now). On Max AC it seems to run constantly. It runs less on batteries, maybe every 5 min. as you say. My cpu runs at 47-52C on "normal" computing, after gaming recently it was up to 70C but dropped rapidly. HDD is usually around 38-39, can go into low 40s. As I write I'm at 48C cpu and 35C HDD. I'll leave it idle awhile and see what happens. I've gotten used to it running, and hardly hear it now, but was concerned at first.

Here's 30 minutes idle on AC. I have SpeedSwitchXP but wasn't running it.

thx for your input.. this seems to be the same thing with mine. It runs almost constantly when at full power and every 5 mins when running at 600 Mhz on batteries. I called Acer tech support about this and they said their unit is silent . I am reluctunt to send it in right now because it's the only computer I have.

I just noticed that you had the same temp of 46 at full power, mine doesn't work like that.

When laptop set to work at 600 Mhz, the fan turns on at 55 works for 30 seconds or until reaches 49 and turns off, that happens every 5 mins. Same thing for 1.5 Ghz mode, except it happens more frequent. I wouldn't say the fan loud, but you can definitely hear air rushing if you are in a quiet environment. I am little disappointed, because I really hoped it would be like M6N, completely silent at 600Mhz mode. Not sure what I should do in this case. I can definitely live with it, but I wouldn’t want to take it to library or lecture.

Yeah, mine's like a "heat rushing" noise, but I consider it reasonably quiet. Not dead silent like my work lap Dell C610 or my lady's work lap Thinkpad, but they are much less performance units. I imagine your ATI 9700 accounts for some of that. Good luck.

if u think it's defective doesn't the store u bought it have a return policy? like in the first 15-30days? why get it repaired when u spent so much on it to get it fixed in the first week? maybe that is my thinking but if i spend a lot of money on something in the gauranteed time frame i would just return it, personal opinion by the way..
