folks, i've had my dell inspiron 6000 for one week now, and i've already had a few minor problems with it. i've talked about some already in a couple different threads (none of which i started), but i thought i'd consolidate them in one for informational purposes, and also hopefully to get some solutions.

1. dim screen: when i turned on the 6000 for the first time, it was noticeably dimmer and harder to read than the 8600 i was about to return. maxing out the brightness with the FN function brought it up to par with the 8600, which was at mid-level brightness. i was happy for the quick fix, but i am wondering now if maybe i have a bum screen. judging by the discussion here, mostly about the 9200, i wouldn't be the first. i wonder also if the maximum brightness setting will hurt my battery life. i have the WSXGA+, by the way.

2. paint scratching off: after just four days of light use, transporting the 6000 to and from class in a bag with a folder and paperback books only, i noticed what looked like smudges on the silver paint on the back of the screen. only these wouldn't rub off. when i looked closely, i realized they were small scratches. i reiterate that my use was light: i had my previous dell laptop for six years with no such problems. i called dell, and they are sending me a quicksnap cover, which should protect against the worst. however, i can only assume that this is a problem with all the 6000s.

3. bezel buckling: the plastic beneath the screen is attached by screws only at the very outer ends. as a result, as the poster "atrus" has also noted, the plastic buckles, or sags, across the middle. this is not a problem, per se, but i can imagine crumbs or dust accumulating in the space. it also affects the appearance of the computer, for whatever that's worth.

4. fan runs constantly: i believe another poster also mentioned this. i expect it can be easily remedied, but i don't know how, myself. thanks for thoughts.
