looks real good...i would highly consider it except i don't know how well it displaces heat and its durability...the 3 yr warranty is real nice tho.

NC8220 vs Acer 8103LMi

Any wise advice about notebook buying? Both these models have the X600 video card. I want a good business notebook useful for a bit of less extreme gaming (eg Medal of Honour etc.) Can anyone think of any major advantages of one or the other laptop?

Thanks for the forum. First-time question but long time reader!

Why not Acer 8104?

My considerations when buying a laptop that prevented me from going with HP
1. HP has historically had poor finishes - they wore out with time. It is supposed to be addressed now but then I dont want to risk my money
2. It isnt out - and it has been out for a while now.
3. It says it has laminated finish and HDD protection, but no mag-alloy frame/lid/base.

On the plus side (its a big plus): this thing is 1.1" thin.. that's pretty good

Sorry I dont have info on Acer - but others would be able to help you on that.

The NC8230 lid is housed in magnesium alloy. I'm pretty sure I saw this in the PC Magazine review. I think most HP business notebooks lids are finished in magnesium alloy.

i'd wait for reviews before considering it...check cnet in a month or so...otherwise the t-series ibm is always a good buy (and the dell latitude d610 is a cheaper alternative).

It does look like they would get in the way of the spacebar though.

One thing I will say, is they could have left that serial port out and put a DVI port there. I guess they figured someone out there still uses serial devices.

for those of us familiar with ibm and hp, those 3 buttons above the touch pad are for the pointing stick in between the keys. the bottom buttons are for the touchpad. also, there are other types of travel batteries that you can get. i have a 2 pound travel battery for my toshiba portege-gives me a whopping 6-8 hours extra battery life and makes my ultraportable tip scales at 5.5 pounds-not bad considering battery life.

I love my HP. It is an extremely tough laptop, definitely not any worse than a Thinkpad (I've owned both). However, I think both are overpriced, and I've only had them due to work.

I think if I were buying a laptop myself I'd get the tm8104.

You are connected with HP's US Chat Service. My name is Lori. How may I help you today?
Lori: Hello and Welcome to HP USA presales mobility and wireless chat!
Lori: Thanks for waiting! How can I help you today?
you: Hello. I am very much interested in the nc8230 laptop that has been listed as "coming soon" on the HP website for about a month now. When will this laptop be available to order? When will it begin shipping (specifically the WUXGA screen models)?
you: Thanks.
Lori: Sure, I would be glad to help you with your questions today!
Lori: The nc8230 is due to be available for purchase in March. We have not been given a date yet.
Lori: It will start shipping shortly after.
you: With all due respect, March can be tomorrow, or 4 weeks from now, any idea whether it is early March or late March?
you: Thanks!
Lori: No problem. I understand this model looks really good and I wish I could sell it right now. At this time we haven't been given much information accept it will be March. I feel it will be towards the end of March.
you: Ok. Thank you very much for your help. I presume there may be a parts supply issues or final tweaking going on. I guess better be late than be released prematurely...
Lori: That's very true.

I would like to see more upclose pictures of this model and spec on it.

I went to the DELL stores and saw their newer model. Wasn't too bad.

the nc8230 is available now on the HP website. But only some preconfigured models, which do not look bad except I need the wuxga screen...

They now also have a 3d demo of this model up.
